Question for those who've made great gains on their own, and those who had trainers..

I have been competeing for quite a while now and have had 4 trainers, each one is different in the approach to training, and drugs, dieting is a little different as each person requires different dietary needs.
Krishna however thinks he does not need a trainer which is fine that is his belief, I think if you are going to compete let me refraze that if you are going to compete You NEED a trainer, you cannot do it yourself, you need someone to look at you objectively.

I am now working with Charles Glass and making great strides in my training, dieting, and my overall feeling about my physique. He says I will be pro in 2-4 yrs, he is the most complete and thorugh trainer I have ever worked with. And when we work out it is the most intense, gut busting training ever. Charles is the man, but he will not work with anyone off the street, infact just to get ahold of him is nearly impossible, he is very busy, and the most sought after trainer in the world. It is a good thing we have friends in common...Or I might not have had the chance to work with him.

All in all it depends on your goals in training, and your bank account too.

Exactly... ;) Good luck with Charles.

I guess when you mentioned personal trainors, all the nimrods at my gym came to mind. I'm bigger, and in better shape then every one of them. I've known people who used them with little to no results. It irks me to see people spend money on them for nothing. If you have access to a top notch or world class trainor, then definitely consider it. Sounds like the guy your buddy used is pretty good. I know I'm backtracking on what I originally said, but I'm just not used to being around trainors that are worth a shit, and that's why I say I'll never use one.

Trainer or mot it's still going to be trial and error. The trainer is going to have you do things that have worked for him and they may or may not work for you. It will be a good idea in some aspect thought. Like having an objective person to critque your bodies faults, or push you harder than you could push yourself.

Charles Glass is the man. I am impressed that he is your trainer. If I wish I could have him as my trainer. Just curious...how much does he charge an hour? :p

It all comes down to the trainer. Get recommends, look at their resumes, try a few different ones.

Unfortunately most trainers that I see are talking on their cell phones while someone walks on a tread mill......hmmm not really worth 60+/hr.

The really good ones come with a good price tag as well.

I posted this on the training board, but it gets very little traffic compared to this one. If it gets moved, it gets moved, but here it goes anyway...

My boy did his first cycle this year. he's a big kid naturally, but man, did he blow up and seems to be holding gains just fine as it's 2 weeks since he finished up. He works out with a friend of his who competes and this guy is gonna start training him (paid service) because my boy wants to do a show. I can't really afford a trainer, but this guys seems to be good. Guys who came a long way on their own, was all trial and error the whole time? And guys who had trainers, what did they determine about you before they began training you and what did they do so differently from what you were doing? Thanks. For the record I'm under 10% BF and currently have a 34' waist (only getys to 33" @7%) and 16-1/2 inch arms (Sucks), 5'9 192 lbs. Just to give you guys an idea of where I'm at.

IMO only you know your body...I had a PT for awhile and he had me doing alot of stuff that I normally didn't do, and the results were average. If you've been training for X years, then you should know your own body and what you need to improve on and what weight, reps, and rest work best for you.

my sentiments exactly!

IMO a drug and diet expert would be more valuable to someone training for competition than a basic trainer would be.

So true. The problem lies with the fact that some people are better at figuring out their bodies than others.

I would never want a trainer, a spotting partner who can also help motivate me is enough. And if he can motivate me on legs day then I may pay him! lol

Yeah. When I refer to a trainer, I'm referring to a training/drug/diet expert. I'm relating to BB. Trainers will get you where you want to go quicker than you can. They know all the mistakes, so that you don't have to go through them and learn for yourself.
