i can only go once a week to the gym, trust me. i figured i would work out my back bicep and calves. adn twice a week at home do push ups about 10 sets 5 sets of regular pushups and 5 sets of wide since it works out chest shoulder and tricep is this good enough for hitting the muscle for development? not trying to look liek arnold ro anything but its mostly for endurance and keep good psyhique and for legs jog/sprint twice a week together one after the other and bike twice a week on hard gear for endurance and leg development what do you think? not trying to get big looks liek mens health cover basically need to drop another 10% BF THOUGH

why can you only go to the gym once a week?

I'm with guards-- 1x a week bro? maybe you ought to invest a barbell and a bench... cheap if found at yardsale and will be the best investment you ever made.

Bro, forget about bi's and calfs in the gym if you have limited time. Begin with some big body exercises such as deads, squats or power cleans and then do back and chest. You can get yourself some db's for your home and curl until your hearts content right at home. As for your calfs find a big hill or big stairs and do some explosive running up and down in an interval training sense. I have very developed calfs and that's all I do for them. But as far as push-ups they won't make you grow, only resistance training of a progressive nature will make you grow. I do literally hundreds of push-ups every week just to pass the time on off days and all they do IMO is keep me toned up. hth

re

bro, i always finish a good chest workout with pushups.....i do a few sets and just focus on the blood rushing in my muscles, i dont think there is a better excercise for shape using natural movements.

i can think of a better investment.:alien:

The problem with doing only push ups is that you won't be able to generate enough intensity. So . . .

Suggestion 1: slow down your movement. Try 10 seconds down, 10 seconds up. Even longer if necessary.

Suggestion 2: find some way to do dips. On your kitchen counter, your couch, between two saw horses in your garage -- whatever. Dips allow you to place more stress (i.e. your entire bodyweight) on your chest muscles.

Herschel Walker made it to the NFL doing only pushups and situps.....then again he did about 1,000 reps every day.

he was genetically gifted. but i dont think we should get into a topic of genetics. my last thread about it got deleted.

jesus christ, dialtone, your back is fuckin massive!

callling bullshit here, push-ups, especially 1 arms done correctly are way better than bench in everyway, that is get in normal pushup position and just put 1 arm behind your back no moving your feet or anything

Can you video tape yourself doing these and allow me to see you? lol Sounds like it would be pretty rough on the shoulder, but not the chest.

I said this when CounterStrike posted this same exact question on teh training board. (I think he is going to keep asking till he gets the answer he wants to hear.)

I used to do 300 finger tip pushups every day. I got gains from this... but I didn't remotely get the chest development I did from free weights

Back in the day when I first started I didn't have much, an ez-curl bar and some plastic weights so I would do pushups. I would vary them, close grips, wide grips, deep wide grips using the ez-curl as a stand, incline(legs on high workhorse bench) and military pushups(handstand or legs propped high on the wall). I was young and grew like a weed but I would imagine it could still work now... especially now I know more about diet, rest, supplementation and etc.

If you do push ups only, make sure you pre-exhaust the chest muscles, and superset them with dips, or add dumbell flys for a tri-set. Ive been saying this since 1963, and its just as true now as it was then.

I have done 1000's of one arm pushups, and 1000's of one arm one leg pushups. it doesn't work out my chest at all, it's mostly all tricep and shoulder and technique :)
