Protien Bars

What is everyone's opinion of protein bars? The good things and bad things about them.
I usually have 1 or 2 a day (Met-Rx Protein Plus or Pure Protein) They help me get over cravings for sweets. But anyway how do you guys feel about them?

Real food is ALWAYS a better choice to a bar....but there is no denying the convenience of them.

I usually eat one a day, I like Met-Rx Protein Plus Bavarian Mint or Pure Protein Chewy Chocolate Chip.

If you have the choice of a chicken breast or a protein bar, clearly you want to go with the real food - BUT if the choice is a protein bar or a candy bar - well then, you know what to do. :)

P.S. Shakes are a better option to a bar, BTW - if you have a blender handy, they don't have some of the crap fillers that bars have.

I eat them if I'm away from home and can't make a proper meal...

One of the things that bothers me about the low-carb bars is that the damn glycerine gives me an "irritable bowel" so to speak...

I'm currently hooked on premier protein bars. 31g of protein, and only 12 grams of carbs. For some it's too much carbs. But to me, it's like a sore dick, you can't beat it.

Also the foil tuna fish packets are almost as convienient as protein bars. More g's of protein, and no carbs.

As for the low-carb bars, they are very handy, but after about 2 of them, towards the end of the day the oligofructose which is indigestible is a feeding ground for microrgansims in the lower GI. This creates a very bad case of gas build-up later in the day from the release of gas from the organisms. This sucks when sitting in class all day...ouch...I mean whewwweyyyy.

Optimum makes a good one toasted coconut. 21 gm pro. 2.5 gms carbs 5 gms fat.

Also Myoplex lite peanut butter crunch 15 pro 25 carbs 4.5 fat.

Good stuff!!!

I agree with voodoo, when I was going to diet for a comp., this lady who owns a supplement store and who helped me get everything together told me it would be best if I cut them out and only ate real food!! I love them, so that was hard- I had to finish my box and then that was it. But, the is no denying the convenience and most (not the ones with loads of sugar) are better than grabbing a sugary fattening snack!
What is with those "protien" bars anyway that have like 30 grams of sugar and 8 grams of fat?? Sounds almost like a Snickers bar to me!

I use to avidly eat protein bars(like 2-4 a day), but I have not ate more than 4 in the last 2 months. Through my experience with them, I have found, that sometimes when I eat bars instead of real food , I end up eating less calories, but this depends on the bar and the real food I plan to eat. For example, late night, there were times when I would feel content after eating 1 designer protein bar(250 calories), but I would need to eat 700 calories from nuts and tuna to acheive the feeling of content. Even when this is the case, I prefer real food because it allows me to know exactly what I am eating and usually real-food is healthier(i.e no trans, saturated fat, hydro. oils, high GI carbs). I am not sure about this, but I also think that generally real food(as long as its low GI carbs, fats, or protein) does not cause as much insulin activity. As a general rule, I do not eat any processed (carb) foods(except post-workot), or nutrition(including low-carb/protein) bars. If I only had the option of eating a protein bar or sweets, I would definetly eat the protein bar.
