personal trainer at the YMCA

hey guys, i am just starting to workout and was thinking about getting a personal trainer at the YMCA in my town. whenever i am there working out, i see the trainers showing the person they are working with all of the machines and how they help each body part. I am just starting a routine with the major lifts, so i don't want to be forced to do all of the machines. is it worth asking a trainer to help me with the workout i have, or to just forget about it and do it on my own? i feel like it would be kind of arrogant and make me seem like a know-it-all if i were to ask him.. any ideas? thanks to anyone who helps.

doing your own research into the style of training you want to do, researching diet, and keeping logs to studt how you react to the training and diet are where you will eventually wind up regtardless of who you hire. no one can tell you the best way to eat and lift. you will need to figure it out on your own. the only worth while good trainer would be the one who would only sign you up for 1 sesson total and help you develop a game plan to conduct your studies and suggest a start point. anything more is them milking your wallet and wasting your time imo.

Maybe you'll feel more comfortable asking an elite member. Members notice other members and if you're there often, soem of the more advanced guys will want to help you out because we've all been there before. Plus, they'll do it for free.

if you're talking about learning the lifts, then yeah :) a lot of the guys on here have been really helpful

Actually, it was an accidental play on words. I was referring to the top guys at his gym :)

ah lol... nah the trainers are my gym barely know anything about the major lifts and most of the "bigger guys" use the rack for curls (i've seen this my last 5 times while waiting to squat). The trainers are pussies who use the smith machine for everything and do all sorts of other stupid stuff with bands; no way i am getting into that stuff. It has been a good learning experience figuring everything out on my own, and i feel like i am doing alright so far :)

Is there an elite gym near you? Where do the top trainers work? It's a real advantage to be able to look across the floor and see something new and cutting edge.

Hi guys,I'm here to ask you somethig I can't answe to.
I am Italian but I wanna move to USA and work as personal trainer, or anything else related with fitness and sport.
Certification don't matter, I have NPTI dploma and both NSCA cetifications.
I think to be prepared for this job, Iwork in Italy as pt as well, but the problem is that I don't know how it is possible coming in USA and be hired. I can't have a working visa from here in Italy, and going to USA with tourist visa makes impossible converting it into working.
It's a great problem.
Thank you:theshadow

If you are coming to the states, just to train.... pretty ballzy. You better have some sort of professional connection before such an extravaganza. You sort picked the wrong time. In case you haven't heard, our economy isn't doing so well.
