How many of you big boys do pull ups?

Wished I could....

I might crank 1 or 2 out occasionally, but it's not part of my routine....

At 260lb's it's pretty tough.

Then some 160-180 pound musclehead will crank out 10-20....not good for my ego to say the least. :)

I'm not over 250 but at 240 I can do 12 for my first set. The key is to build up with ladders. Do a single, rest a minute then do two, rest a minute and do three. You get the picture. Before I really tried to improve them I could do two or three reps tops.

I don't weigh 250 but with the additional weight I strap on it's pushing 260...did 5x5 with 75 lbs last week

I always do at least 3x5 on back day. When I do close grip I grab a 40lb dumbell between my feet...so pulling 270ish isn't so bad IMHO!

When I first started training yrs. ago I couldn't do one :worried: . It was so embarrassing I made it my goal to be able to do at least a set of 10. I can proudly say it's the first exercise I do for back now. First set is 12 reps. From there I will do (3)weighted sets(up to 35lbs.) for 8-10 reps.

I'm around 280, and haven't tried them yet since I got back in the gym. I'm sure I could bust out 3 or so, but I won't try it until I'm confident that I could do 3 full sets.

I can do my own body weight... 10, 8, 5..and then Im pooped and move on to the lat pull down.

OH over 250!!!! LOL.... NOWHERE near that weight over here. Ooops...lol..Im like 140 :p

I'm at 279.5...down from 302lbs....and I can do a couple.

But I can do weighted dips....

I'm now up to twenty reps for my first set @ 240 lbs and add a 45lb plate for reps of five after my first set.

Java thats some incredible back strength.. espeically for a overgrown computer nerd. :-)
Thanks, I started doing two's and threes about three years ago. It was just embarassing being 240 lbs and not being able to do twelve chins so I made it a goal.

Ooh , let me clarify
Chins are reverse grip and are generally much easier for a heavy guy as it's a bicep excersize
Pull ups are a straight grip and are genreally a back excersize

I can do ten pull ups on my first set and tehy are definitely harder for big guys. In high school I could crank out twenty like nothing and in wrestling I was able to "walk the peg board", watch Vision Quest if you don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm only about 150lbs and am doing 22 pull-ups on the first set currently. I imagine i will put on a bit of weight but that's not my goal at all so will be interesting to see if i can keep improving with the pull-ups. The plan is to be able to do 30 unweighted.

This is a pretty inspiring vid that was posted on C&C a little while ago: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y-73eJkeOmI

it doesn't really matter how much you weigh....it's all a matter of getting used to it. when i first started lifting i made myself do 50 pull ups before i started my back workout...it used to take me about 35 minutes just to do pull ups. but i eventually got better....now i do them weighted with about 30lbs on me for 8-10.

if someone does dumbells their whole life and then switches over to bench he won't be able to lift as much....the more you do of an exercise the better and stornger you get at it. i have a friend who is 230lbs....couldn't do a pullup to save is life 5 months ago...now he can do about 7.

Started my last back day with pull ups and cranked out twelve on first set, chin over bar and 95% lockout on bottom. My last weigh in, a week ago, was 242 lbs.

Harder for big guys?? That's definitely an excuse. If you don't do them ever you won't get better at them. I can do 27 (without weight) and normally just do 2 sets of 20 everytime I work out (one overhand, one underhand).

Strength isn't linear to bodyweight. :coffee:

well i am at 235 right now but at 250 i could do 5 sets 10 reps .i never tried to do more as that was my first back exersize "OH" i would do 5 sets of close grip pull up's right after as well 10 ,10 ,8 ,6, 5 as i was getting cooked from the wide grip .are we talking about wide grip???? "LOL"

That guy couldn't squat shit. This is a big boy thread made by a big boy for big boys. :chomp:

Fair enough. I personally find it amazing how a man can have such strength and control over his own body. I'd prefer to be able to lift my whole body with one hand than bench or squat big weights. Everyone has different goals though.

240lbs and I can do a few reps (3-5) with 70-90lbs hanging from my nuts.

Going for reps is pointless when you're heavier imo, there's no way would I be able to do high reps with my bodyweight (like the 160lb pullup artists who like to make everything a pissing contest about ''relative strength''), just like I wouldn't be able to bench 80% of my max for high reps either...

I'm on my way down to single didget BF%, I'm about 17% right now, so we'll see where my weights lands when it's over.

Damn, that is big. Post a pic sometime.

When I'm done with my "transformation" - I will post all before/during/final pics.

I have a long "comeback" story to go along with all this, and I owe SO MUCH of it to E.F., it's MODs/ADMINs/Members.........

I hit pullups everytime on back. I'm 255.... I typically do 50 reps total and it is taking me 4 sets now, it used to take me 8 sets....

They are definitely working my back is getting wider and alot stronger.

That's a great effort at your bodyweight. Well done!

Do you do any sets with added weight?
