Opening a GNC Franchise

A GNC nearby closed a few months ago, in Alhambra, CA. A few months leading up to it, the shelves were half stocked. It was in a strip mall with about 50% vacancy, so foot traffic was poor. The Successful stores seem to be in the Standard Malls, but overhead costs could be pretty high. Good luck.

BTW: I still renew my Gold Card for 20% discounts for emergency protein runs. Otherwise, I plan my budget and supplement intake with cheaper online purchases. GNC just can't compete with online stores.

You are totally right though, GNC's prices are only good during golds card week. I don't really go there either unless it's gold card week.

id say avoid gnc, they barely survive, with the internet their absolute,i really dont see them being in business to many more years to come

What do you all think about opening up a GNC Franchise? I'm 20 years old, full of motivation and drive to accomplish anything, especially when it involves money to be made. I've looked up the prices of opening a GNC and it would be around 165,000-220,000. Let me know what you all think about it and what your tips and Ideas are on it, for instance what I can bring in each year and so fourth. Also really quick I know that location would be crucial, as for with any business of course. :)

if you do this, the rest is conjecture:

call 25 current franchise owners. DO NOT CALL THE LIST THE FRANCHISOR
PROVIDES!

talk at length to these people about profitibility, franchise support and
overall viability of business. have a list of questions before you start
dialing and stay focused on your objectives.

ask yourself questions: can i manage a business? will i be an owner\operator
or will i be an off premises owner?

chances are if you've never managed people and have never been in sales,
you will have a tough time with a GNC.

site selection is the easy part my friend........... running a business aint for
everybody

if i was going to get into the biz, i would stay away from franchising as well. it seems like theres much more potential out there that creative thinking can capture.

i agree, but it takes waaaaay more than creativity. i generally have to teach
my creative peeps to temper their creativity with pragmatism. especially
if i have them in a supervisory or management position. i want "idea"
people, but i wanna make sure they are firmly grounded and know
contexually when to be creative. creative = problem solver.

early in my career i was very creative. i enetered the industry and over
the course of 5 years i challenged almost every facet of the biz. i
developed a multitude of SOP's, training methods and pay structures
that resonated throughout the industry. the very people who called
me crazy were suddenly using my ideas lol! in a short time everyone
was employing my methods........... and i was making 150k yr. a joke
relative to my hard work and contribution to the industry.

the last 15 years have been different, night and day different. am i
still creative? of course, but i have perspective and i understand the
complexities of running a multimillion dollar operation. i understand
my creativity is worthless without the other 100 qualities that it
takes to run a business. ( the value in surrounding yourself with
smart - creative people )

there's a lot of pluses to owning a franchise:

1. brand name recognition.

2. franchise support.

3. successful business template

it aint my cup of tea, but for some, i believe it to be a good thing.

i agree with your points, its just not my cup of tea either.

your style of writing shows a srong verbal intelligence and a strong creative
flare. the emotional content is equally as telling. you have most cretainly
made wrong moves based on emotional reactivity. you are high on smarts
and creativity, but your limbic system shoots you in the foot. you will
overcome this and i bet you already figured it out.

Yes, I have been in ales before for a few years and I also have been in management as well. My main issue with it all though is finding something that works and works well. As you said, Franchises are already recognized by there name brands and what not so its not like your going into the market with a product no one in the world has ever heard of. Do you think that GNC yourself is a good one to go with though? I do understand that mixed reviews will be highly involved in doing research and asking questions about such a thing. By the way, thanks a lot for your previous posts, they helped me look past some of the harder things in starting a business that I was previously worried about.

i don't realy know if GNC is a good franchise or not. if i were going to buy
a franchise, i'd go for something that provides a service or info....... no product.
replacing product - maintaining inventory is the least profitable. selling a
service and info is typically more profitable in general.

do your research young man and you can pm me if you need help on specifics.
mr. plunkey is a sharp businessman and i'm sure he could be of help too.
