im leaving from spokanne wa with my brother in law this evening, should be in ND by tomorrow morning... looking for work in the booming oil industry there...
ive left my family behind at home in california and i need to WORK to get back and fourth to support them... i have a mortgage to pay as well... im on vacation from my job of over 5 years working in a frozen foods warehouse... ive been the company's best worker since the day i walked in the door, it a $60k job that im willing to walk out on to find success in the oil fields...
wish me luck, i have 3wks vacation time to buy me over and a tax return coming in about a month... ND or bust.
anyone willing to hook up a good bro with a strong work ethic let me know...

So your plan is to not live with your family and send money home?
Do you think you can make that much more in the oil fields to make it worth it?

You're willing to give up the 60k job for the *possibility* of securing a better paying job in ND? I've lived in the Black Hills for 15 years and had considered checking out the ND industry but local peeps have warned that housing is NOW the major issue. You 'may' find space at the camps during your work week but more than likely you'll have to find housing up to a couple hours away (some even suggested as far as Belle Fourche, SD).

Check out this site: North Dakota Forum - Relocation, Moving, Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum

Read some of the threads about housing issues, and the "real" wages compared to the risk of each 'entry-level' position.

Good Luck, but don't make any rash decisions.

no... roughnecking and similar oil work jobs are usually 2 weeks on 2 weeks off...
yes,,, most entry level jobs in that industry start at 85k/yr with all the overtime, so even at first if i only made a little more after traveling expense, in the long run i have a much better future looking at making 100k+ within a year or so... at my current job if im promoted to be a supervison (non union) from my union job, i would have to take a pay CUT... so im at a dead end with this company...

If you look at the North Dakota job service site, most entry-level positions are 15-20.00(hr). I'm not trying to discourage you from pursuing this, but it would make sense for you guys to know what the real circumstances are before you invest all your time, money, and energy.

CA to North Dakota is one hell of a relocation. The snow in the opening scene of Fargo (movie) is enough to keep me from ever wanting to travel there.

Ok. But its not just travel expenses its needing a place to live also.
Also consider that if you take a supervisor job, the experience is worth something as well. Think about where you want to be in 5 years. 5 years experience as a supervisor and you may get promoted again, or have a good resume to shop around. And its a cushy desk job compared to working nights and freezing your ass off outdoors in hard physical labor.

I'm not criticizing you, I'm just hoping you consider everything. I'm in the oil business myself, and I know that its a very good business to be in. Good pay, good benefits, and pretty much recession proof these days.

ive worked in cold storage for over 8 years... our blast freezer is like 30 below... i would plan on relocation the family somewhere out of california when we are able to sell our house... not ND, but somewhere where the commute would not be quite as bad...

Isn't roughnecking (hopefully that's the right term) a very dangerous job? What does the missus think about that?
