NHL Playoffs...

BBR100

New member
With a rigorous 82-game schedule officially in the books, the real season begins for the 16 NHL teams in search of Lord Stanley's mug.

There will be plenty of storylines to follow when the Stanley Cup playoffs begin Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens will clash for a 32nd time in their storied rivalry. The Bruins are looking to beat a Montreal team that has already knocked them out three times this decade. It's been 15 years since Boston has ousted the Canadiens in a playoff series.

Philadelphia had a golden opportunity to nail down home ice advantage in the opening round, but dropped a 4-3 decision to the New York Rangers, forcing the Flyers to start on the road against the hated Penguins. The Flyers must also contend with stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who became the fourth player in team history to win the Art Ross Trophy as leading NHL scorer.

Over in the Western Conference, the Vancouver Canucks used a late-season surge to snatch the Northwest crown away from Calgary. Due to injuries and salary cap issues, the Flames started only 15 skaters during their final two games.

The San Jose Sharks secured home ice throughout the playoffs, an important fact with the NHL club losing only five times at HP Pavilion.

Eastern Conference
(1) Boston (53-19-10, 116 points) vs. (8) Montreal (41-30-11, 93 points)

The Bruins were clearly the best team in the East and have beaten Montreal the last five times. However, Boston can't take Montreal lightly, especially when considering its past playoff failures against the Habs.

The teams have met in the post-season 31 times, with the Canadiens skating away with 24 series victories. Montreal's most recent conquest was a seven-game affair during last season's first round. The Bruins also held the No. 1 seed in 2002, only to fall to Montreal in the opening round in six games.

(2) Washington (50-24-8, 108 points) vs. (7) New York Rangers (43-30-9, 95 points)

Superstar sniper Alex Ovechkin, the Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy winner as the NHL's top scorer with 56 goals, leads the Capitals' attack. Washington, which cruised to the Southeast Division title by 11 points over Carolina, defeated the Rangers three of four times this season.

(3) New Jersey (51-27-4, 106 points) vs. (6) Carolina (45-30-7, 97 points)

New Jersey finished its campaign with a 3-2 win over the Hurricanes, and with forward Zach Parise, one of the most talented scorers in all of hockey. But Carolina upended the Devils in the first three contests of the year, outscoring New Jersey by a 9-5 margin.

(4) Pittsburgh (45-28-9, 99 points) vs. (5) Philadelphia (44-27-11, 99 points)

Although the Flyers would dearly love to gain a measure of revenge for having their post-season halted by the Penguins last year, advancing won't be easy. The Penguins, who eliminated Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference final in 2008, have won five of six games against their state rivals.

Western Conference
(1) San Jose (53-18-11, 117 points) vs. (8) Anaheim (42-33-7, 91 points)

Winners of the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's best regular-season team, the Sharks continue one of the most intense rivalries in hockey against their fellow California foes. San Jose finished with a franchise record of 53 victories, while posting the league's best home mark of 32-5-4 this season. But Anaheim has beaten the Sharks in two of the six games, including a convincing 5-2 win in San Jose on April 4.

(2) Detroit (51-21-10, 112 points) vs. (7) Columbus (41-31-10, 92 points)

The Blue Jackets face a good and bad news scenario heading into the playoffs. Columbus reached the post-season for the first time in its nine-year existence. On the other hand, the team has the unenviable task of taking on the defending Stanley Cup champions. Although the Red Wings concluded the season 3-6-1, they remain a serious threat to repeat.

(3) Vancouver (45-27-10, 100 points) vs. (6) St. Louis (41-31-10, 92 points)

In Roberto Luongo, the Canucks have one the best goaltenders in the NHL. That's a very good thing considering Vancouver struggled to score this season. The Canucks managed just 246 goals, the fourth worst total among West playoff teams. The Blues, who split a four-game set with Vancouver this year, are in the post-season for the first time since 2004, and had the best second-half record in the NHL (25-9-7).

(4) Chicago (46-24-12, 104 points) vs. (5) Calgary (46-30-6, 98 points)

The Flames are banged up and face a Chicago team that's handled them quite easily this season. Calgary is 0-3-1 against the Blackhawks, while being outscored 19-7. Another problem for the Flames: all four games were played when the team was healthy.

PLAYOFFFFFFFFFFSSSSS!!!!!!

'Bout time the season should have ended 20 games ago...

Should be a lot of intrigue in the 1st round:

Can Vancouver & Carolina stay hot?

Can Calgary's toughness make up for their blue-line injuries?

Is Chris Osgood in game shape?

Just how big were the Kunitz and Guerin trades for Pittsburgh? (I say they were HUGE)

Rangers/Caps: a series featuring an all offensive/blah defensive team with a question mark in goal against a team that tries to win every game 1-0 with their goalie bailing them out nightly

San Jose/Anaheim should see it's fair share of PIM's

GAME ON!!!

I like Vancouver and Carolina can take the Devils if Brodeur doesn't play like he always does.
Osgood has been too old for too long but that doesn't stop Detroit every year. Columbus could give them a much harder time than expected.
Battle of Pennsylvania should be good. I like Pittsburgh. Too many questions with Philly.
Rangers have goaltending over Caps but that's about it. What's that idiot Avery going to do?
Sharks to the finals this year.

How can you not mention Bruins and Habs?
Nobody has this series lasting more than 5 or 6 games but it's the playoffs. It could happen. It'll be INTENSE, emotional and physical. Bruins Habs always are when they face eachother in a best of seven.

I coach my kid's bantam b (not overly competitive 13/14 yrs old) and that gets my adrenalin pumping. I'm a diehard hockey fan as you may have noticed.

As a Leaf fan, I'm used to cheering for other teams in the playoffs.
I'd love to see Calgary in the finals or Chicago & Pittsburgh. Two young fast teams.

Have to give leafs fans credit for loyalty.
I like Chicago and good to see them doing well again with Bill Wirtz out of the picture.
I'd prefer to see the toughness of San Jose and Boston.(can't believe I just said that).

They HAVE given us some memorable playoff moments over the years;

Remember the time Kovalev was skating with the puck along his own blue-line in OT, one of the Bruins BARELY touched him and he acted like he'd been shot, turned the puck over and the Bruins scored in OT to win it?

That might have been the same year Rich Zednick got elbowed from across the rink and knocked out, I think it was Nick Boynton on the B's....he bought a suspension for that 1...

Also like Tim Thomas for Vezina this year

It was Kyle McLaren. Zednik was never the same after that.
I don't think anyone even went after Mclaren either.

Not the same as the days of Ferguson/Bouchard/Nilan/Kordic vs Cashman/O'Reilly/Jonathan/Wensink/Miller.

Jnevin's right. I need another hobby.

It's always more intense when you have a kid or family member involved in the game. I damn near started some riots when my little bro was playing, and distinctly remember chasing a pack of punks around the arena twice after they spit into the penalty box when my bro was in there. Good memories.:)

Are you guys old enough to remember O'Reilley and Mike Millbury going into the stands @ MSG and Millbury beat the guy with his own shoe??

I'm almost 50 and I still referee and play.
When it's in your blood.....................

Old enough to remmeber when bench clearing brawls were the norm.

awww...the good ol' days when you tuned in for the national anthem to make sure you didn't miss a brawl during the warmup.

I was around but still an infant when Leafs last won the Cup.

Ahhh, I miss playing...and ref-ing....

I was a goalie, still have almost all my equipment, even though I'm probably never gonna play again...just can't let it go.

Hockey isn't a big part of people's lives here. I mean if you call that "living"

Damn I shoulda been born in Canada....

Maybe we should form a EF hockey team?
You're a goalie. I'm sure we have more players.
Pick3 can wash our jock straps.

a pretty good night of hockey last night.
Pens handled Flyers without too much difficulty but you know the battle of Pennsylvania is going to heat up over the next few games.
Only real surprise was Rangers over Washington with goaltending being the big difference. Ovechkin is easily the best player in the league. Heeven dominates physically..Crosby or Malkin are not even close.

Tonights lineup

CANADIENS VS BRUINS

Where are the Bruins fans. You got us this year. Bruins are better in almost every aspect of the game. C'mon jump on the bandwagon.
What happened in the past is history....

BLUE JACKETS VS RED WINGS
First time ever in playoffs for Columbus. Of course Detroit is too deep but Blue Jackets and goaltending will hopefully surprise.

FLAMES VS BLACKHAWKS
Got to like young talented Hawks. Especially, with banged up Flames D.

DUCKS VS SHARKS
The Sharks year in SoCal.

I don't mean to brag, but someone went 4 for 4 last night.

I was going NUTS during the Rangers game, banging on my coffee table, etc....I didn't realize the Caps were going to start a big piece of Swiss cheese in goal....Dubinsky goal was sick

Ovechkin is easily the Hart winner this year. If you look up the criteria for the award it says something like "the player MOST VALUABLE to his team" and even though they're all GREAT players, he means more to the Caps than either Crosby or Malkin mean to the Penguins. The big difference between the 3 is that if you sneeze on Ovechkin he doesn't collapse like he was just hit by the Zamboni going @ 80mph.

Of the games 2night I'm most looking fwd to the Bruins/Habs...

Rangers did what they had to to win. Lundqvist kept them alive.
Avery played well too.
Some good intensity with lots of good, clean hitting.

I hope the Bruins-Canadiens are entertaining and Bruins don't run away with it. Too many "ifs" for habs to win. I'm sure I'll be banging tables, kicking and screaming.

The Habs hung in there pretty well, especially after getting down early...

I had a feeling going in that the San Jose/Anaheim series isn't as one sided as a lot of people think. Anaheim is a tough team and San Jose has the Roenick curse...

Game of the night was Calgary/Chicago...Did you see Andre Roy looking lost in his own zone on the 1st Chicago goal like the big goof that he is?

and Lemieux what do they need these guys for?

Montreal's got Brisebois...wtf

Habs played a perfect road game up until Josh Gorges took that incredibly selfish and pointless penalty (every notice how those end up in the back of your net damn near every time?). Notice how meek Chara and Lucic were out there with Georges Laraque breathing down their necks?

Chara is such a big goof...I can run backwards on 1 leg faster than he can skate...He's porbably better than me @ hockey though...

And it's only a matter of time B4 Laraque and Lucic drop the gloves...

Then they'll both get suspended for a month so Bettman can pussy up the league a little more...

dude...he'll probably win Norris trophy this year. I'd take him on my team

Oh, I'd take him in a second....The Rangers haven't had a big time defensive defenceman in a lonnnnnnnnng time

Blues/'Nucks last night was the best 3-0 game I've seen in a while...seemed like the refs in the Philly game were a little whistle happy

All good games last night Canes even series with New Jersey in OT, Pitt goes ahead 2-0 in OT and Vancouver over St-Louis.

Hockey day today with your Rangers getting early start at 1 pm

Lundqvist has been incredible.

He's been great all year, if the team didn't hang him out to dry on so many nights he probably would have had another 1/2 dozen wins or so...

I suffered through the thin years after Richter retired; Kirk McLean, Mike Dunham, Guy Hebert, Ughhhhh

No goaltending, no nothing with habs last night.
No Lucic next game. Maybe if Markov comes back and I'm thinking Gainey's gonna go with Halak in game 3.

Lean years?
Try being a Leaf fan.

What are you talking about...Kovalev has been the best player on the ice in both games! If half of his teammates cared as much as he did, they'd have won game 1.

I thought they had a chance to come back when they scored early in the second but when Boston made it 3-1 they just collapsed.
It was ugly.

Looks like my habs are done but Calgary - Chicago is shaping up to be a great series. Lot of speed, hitting and scoring. A litle bad blood developing too.
Love it.
Pittsburgh and Philly is also getting heated.
Hope the Sharks show up tonight in Anaheim to make it a series.

I think your Habs will be golfing with my Leafs.

Hey guys, been off for a few days....a few thoughts;

As far as Flames/Hawks, Calgary using their toughness (as predicted by ME) to make it a series with all their blue line injuries. Those young guys on the Blackhawks probably haven't gotten knocked around like that since they got a bad report card in the 4th grade...

As far as Habs/Bruins, the hype going into this year with their 100 year anniversary + injuries + the team sending Kovalev home for 2 games (WTF?) they just never got going...There's a guy @ my gym who's a Habs fan and the other day I asked him "If you have to lose to someone in the playoffs, would you rather lose to Boston or the Leafs?" He's still thinking aboooot it...

Canucks even without Sundin made quick work of a hot Blues team. Is it to early to be looking @ a Wings/'Nucks conference final?

Expectations were too high after finishing first in conference last year. The young guys regressed instead of getting better.

As far as Leafs vs Bruins, I'd have to go with losing to Bruins.
Bruins-Canadiens is a real rivalry because of their history and below the hate, a lot of respect.

CBC tries to push Canadiens-Leafs as a great rivalry but moreso for the cities than for the hockey.

I have to disagree Bro. Toronto-Montreal is/has been the longest running rivalry. I have a lot of Leafs and Habs buddies who look at those games as the ultimate games. Even when one of those teams is having a bad year (usually the Leafs), the games are always good. And before they changed the format (again), we were one Gretsky penalty away form a Leafs-Habs Stanley Cup final.

Agree on the long running but that goes back to Original Six days.
I'm 44 and can't remember a playoff match up.
It's a rivalry for sure but not the same as Montreal-Boston or Montreal-Quebec.

I really should move to Canada

Kind of like the Calgary - Edmonton back in the 80's. I can't remember any playoff either, but it must have happened since the 60's.

aaaaaaaaand the canucks sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep the bluess:).. hahaha :)

lets lay out some predictions boys?
from ever series?

bruins going to sweep?

Done.

Habs had injuries and players didn't play as well as they could have.
Bottom line, they lost to a better team. Disappointing series.

Must be sweet for Julien and Ryder.

Calgary - Chicago is the best series so far with a little of everything.
Rangers - Caps good too.

damn forgot to finish my sentence hhaha win the stanley cup this year :artist:

did anyone watch the calgary and chicago series.. 4-1 lead then all of a sudden its 4-4... back n forth..intense game

Great game.
Reminded me of the Calgary game last year or year before where the other team stormed out to a 4-0 lead and everybody went home. Calgary came back and tied the score.
Unfortunately they lost in overtime.

nhl games are up in the bookie section now.. go win some k

pens close out flyers tonight !!

CAPS are gonna come back,,,,I hope

I gotta say I felt bad for Columbus and their fans.
First time making the playoffs and draw Detroit.
Exciting game last night! Fought all the way back to 5-5 only to lose because of too many men on the ice penalty in last couple of minutes.
