New computer problem... (minor one though)

I can't click on anything on my desktop.

I have desktop shortcuts that I can't access. When trying to left click, nothing happens. Now my left click works everywhere else (obviously), my right click works too, but it only brings up the properties menu for the desktop.

Any ideas?

A buddy of mine took a snap shot of his roomates computer main screen then used it as the background. He deleted all of his icons. When the guy came in to use the computer he was clicking on the icons, but nothing would happen (becasue all it was was one big picture).
lol

Are you sure somebody isn't playing a prank on you?

LOL I did that w/ good ol' "print screen"... did it to a co-worker on his bday! Too funny!

First I'd check the screen like the others suggested. Can you move desktop icons around? Sometimes my mouse buttons get reversed so the left works like the right. It goes away in a few seconds if I just keep clicking shit. Click somewhere on your desktop and hit the F5 key (refresh).

No one has access to this computer.

Also, I can not move/drag icons around. Actually when I click on them, they do not even highlight or darken to indicate a selection. I can right click and bring up the general properties menu, and I can save new items to my desktop and they show up (so it can't be a screen shot)

It can be a screenshot still. Change your wallpaper to something completely different then look in the Recycle Bin. If somebody did this trick your old icons are probably in the trash.

I once put clear tape under the LED of the optical mouse belonging to a co-worker. Every time he moved his mouse, the cursor would jump all over the screen.

if you hovr the mouse over the icons, does a description pop up?

No. Nothing shows up.

There is nothing under the recycle bin.

No one has used this computer ever. It is in my home office. Only I am here. It is not a snapshot.

try this...you have to have a virus somewhere. If the desktop was active you should at least get descriptins when you hover the mouse over the icons.

I ran my symantec and nothing was detected.

That was my first thought.

that will fix it...explorer is just fucking up..you could also CTRL + ALT+DEL....then click "task manager" , then "processes" then find explorer , highlight and click "end process" , then while still in task ,manager go to FILE than RUN and type "explorer" and click ok..that will start up explorer.exe and your ready to go .

I have rebooted multiple times.

I also right clicked and nothing was there to unfreeze the desktop under Properties.

Any other suggestions?

Wait a minute... now when I let the mouse sit on the JPEG pics I have on there (not hover or pass over, but sit) it does pop up a description of the item (such as size, etc..) but it won't do it to regular shortcuts like MY COMPUTER and such.

Also, I can browse through Explorer (start menu) and choose Desktop, get a list of the icons and click on them there and they work.

Just not on the desktop itself.

ran spybot (again) and still it found no bugs.

still can't click on the desktop either.

If you installed software that came with this mouse uninstall it, reboot then reinstall it.

If it were the software, then it should be malfunctioning on more than one page right? I can use the left click button on all webpages and every other thing on my computer EXCEPT desktop.

Maybe President Bush can take a minute out of liberating those wonderfully grateful Iraqi people and fix my desktop.

Thanks guys, but none of these have proven useful.

Any other suggestions?

I'd email Ronnie Coleman and ask for advice.

He'd be like...Donts nobody wants to left click on no stupid desktop icons.

It seriously sounds like someone played the screenshot desktop prank on you. What happens when you change the background of your desktop? Thtill can'ts click on no dethktop iconth? Try right clicking on your background, create a new shortcut and see if that one works. Also stop being so ripped.

I tried the new shortcut method with right click activation and it worked.

Just LEFT click doesn't work.

I already changed the wallpaper and background. It wasn't a screenshot.

Oh, I forgot to add...

My HotOrNot rating is 11.2 if that counts.

Something else to consider. (Besides my hotornot rating).

When I make a new user profile on my computer (like Guest), I can actually click on things on that desktop. It is just something under my profile I can't get around.
