NEW all-time biggest Bench Press record set!

At the APF Senior Nationals at Universal City, California. Scot Mendelson did 804, and then followed with 821. Can you imagine that shit on your wrists?? Here is what he told me just after the Arnold after missing his opener of 806:

"806 is easy for me now, I'm getting 700 for 3 reps now in just a t-shirt. I actually had my sights set on an 850 that day in Columbus but I got a 4-second press call on lift number one and then NO call on my second lift. I also was given 3 attempts to bench at my last WPO meet and the rules changed this time. I hit 805 for a double in training shortly before the meet, it just wasnt my day."

amazing numbers, eh?

Shit, at that rate, he may one day be able to bench 1000lb. And if that occurs, it won't matter for jack shit if he doesn't have the body of the top BBers like Arnold, Coleman, etc. That guy will be plastered over every single Bodybuilding magazine in existence.

Pardon me, but that's just unfuckenbelievable!! An 800 lb bench??? I seriously don't know how those guys don't blow out their wrists & elbows fucking around with that kind of weight...

Damn that's strong.

Well, the biggest bench record has always been a quirky thing. Officially recognized before this was 785 by Bill Crawford but Anthony Clark did 800 in '96 I believe at the arnold but it was an incomplete lift given white lights with judges under pressure. Also, Ryan Kennelly recently hit an 801 but it was done as an exhibition and didnt go into the books.

Most impressive about Scot is the 700 for 3 in a t-shirt, no super duty bench press shirt. He is the real deal, he thinks he has 850 in him. At these elite levels, a even a 20-pound gain must feel like a ton....insane

And I thought 400 was a lot of weight!

I feel like I am sitting back reading about something that happened on another planet, it is just damn hard to comprehend!

Anyone have the line on this guys training?

Incredible.

I just stopped answering the question, "how much do you bench?".....

He is a monster.

Heavywear, please dont try to tell us he uses the Cell-Tech, Nitro-Tech stack and thats how he go so strong. Please........For the love of God.

That's fucking amazing. Most guys will never squat or deadlift that much. I know for sure it would utterly wreck my shoulders. God damn weak joints.

I remember Ted Arcidi blowing minds breaking the "700" barrier back in the day - this is just amazing! - 3 reps @700!!!!! I feel old

That's fantanstic. But what reall blows my bind is the few that Squat 1000+. Not taking away from Scot Mendelson's complistments of course.

Just for the record several lifters have Squated as much, but no on have come withing 100lbs of Deadlifting that weight.

Parden my ignorance but what is a lifting shirt? I have never heard of that before. How is it better than just a t-shirt?

I can honestly say after talking to Anthony, Bill K. and a few other of the world's strongest guys that no on will ever hit the 1000 lb. bench press mark.....at least not in our lifetimes.......

Why not? It's gone from 660 to 821 since the 80's. I can see it happening around 2030.

I don't know Dial....there has to be a sticking point........and 1000 lbs. just seems out of reach......shit there isn't anyone out there who can hit 900 with a non-clean lift......and I hope I'm right.....cause the further the record goes the less impressive my 595 in 98' seems.........:p

Spidey, a lifting shirt is usually made of a very thick material, in Scotts case it was a double denium shirt. It takes a couple people to help do the shirt up. Once you get used to a lifting shirt it can easily help you add 50lbs to your bench.

I think lifting shirts should've been banned from the get go, but the cat is out of the bag now.

I totally agree. This is the same as a Major League baseball player using an aluminum bat. If the shirt adds 50 pounds to lifts, why is it legal in the first place?

ha! I wont do that shit man...that is IF they accept my article :)

Scot uses a conventional grip, with a THUMB. I think he is planning on retiring and coming up with a video very shortly.

as far as bench shirts, if you look at scot's best raw lift (without bench shirt) he is at 713 and with a bench shirt he can do 821, he thought he could hit 850. So his shirt gets him over 100 pounds. He is truly king of the bench though, like any of us could throw on a bench shirt and hit 800.

My bench shirt was good for 70 pounds over my raw bench in my last competition. I just wear what the federation allows so I can play on an equal field. Does the higher bench feel like it is really "mine?" No, not to me. A HUGE topic of debate though in the powerlifting world as shirt technology shatters old records.

Mark Kerr, THE UFC Mark Kerr? Drop a PM to a Toledo boy...:)

Did anybody watch the Detroit Lions - Dallas Cowboys game this year? They showed a clip of Larry Allen benching 825 pounds at halftime. Obviously it wasnt official, and maybe he broke some of the normal rules and whatnot, but it was pretty fucking crazy. His teammates were so pumped they were jumping all over his stomache and shit.

"With a career-best bench press of 700 pounds, and a squat lift of 900 pounds, Allen is also considered to be the strongest man to ever play professional football."

I think garry frank has him there...in actual judged competitions. :)

I am sure he was no where near those numbers when he played. Allen was still playing and to hoist that weight while training for football is incredible.

I believe Allen also ran a 4.9 forty at well over 300 pounds.

His best comp dead lift is 900lb i believe. His best unofficial is 900 for 2 reps. *correction* I don't know what I was smoking yesterday but this is Ed Coan best DL, not Scott's. The deadlift record is about 930lb.

MMA fighter Mark Kerr lives in Arizona, not Florida.

Deadlift world record is 933 set by Andy Bolton at the wpo finals.

To those of you that are impressed by an eight hundred pound bench presser....we have one on the powerlifting board, he missed the lockout on 815 a couple weeks ago in competition. Come over and read his posts sometime.

What handle does Mike Miller post under?

Interesting comments from someone who was actually THERE (Jason Burnell) to see Scots massive bench:

"Mendolsons benches - this was the big thing of the day. OK - this guy is huge and we all know he can bench but damn. He OPENED with 804. No, you don't understand. He OPENED with 804. No.. I mean, I think in December with practice and a good day I can SQUAT 804 on a third in a canvas with briefs if I don't walk it out. HE OPENED with 804 IN THE BENCH.. no, you don't get it. He had 804 in his hands. Down and up - slowed some as it got to the top but he got it. Then he went to 821. IT was faster than the opener.

Afterwards he told me (ok, he told US since he was surroundedby people) the the opener "got a little out of the groove" and touched lower than he would have liked so "he had to move it back into place and then press it up." Like that shit just happens ... "oh, 804 was out of place so I just put it back and then lifted it. " He just said it so matter of factly like it happens to us all - like we could relate. Like someone was going to say - Yeah, man. I hate when that happens. "

If 804 is out of place on the floor, most of us have to take the plates off and roll it around. LOL UNREAL
Another thing I won't forget seeing. Monster."
