Gene Rychlak just hit a massive 885 bench at the apf steel city clasic in PA. Who would have thought with Mendy raising the bar so high that his number would be bettered so soon. amazing...but mendy and chabot are still my favorites...

Gene is strong mo-fo. He has hit a few bench sessions at Naz and is a very very explosive lifter, the speed he moves heavy weights is really impressive. I know he has made attempts at his last several meets with weights in the 850+ range and It is great to see the his hard work and dedication has paid off.

i dont know exactly how much he weighs, but hes BIG dude. in spatts' gallery, the picture of her squatting, gene is the head judge. hes huge.

So the whole concet of Shirts is a big phazzaz. If a person can't lift the weight naturally then he didn't acutally lift the weight, but rather was aided, in this case with the shirt. Its like saying I can bench 500 lb on a smith machine but does that really mean anything?

hey although i've never used a shirt, and hold my own raw, dont hate the ones who do use them, in my eyes, its a whole different world....

They are in a totally different world because their ego is preventing them from looking at reality. When I see someone doing 600 bench raw, thats to be respected...anything else is just a big sham.

10 Commandments To Big Muscle
by Ron Harris

Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor’s Supportive Gear

While powerlifting is bodybuilding's neighbor, powerlifting has lost enormous respect from its older fans and past participants over the past two decades. Products like bench press blast shirts, squatting suits, super-wraps, 6" belts and even deadlift shirts, have made it impossible to know how much weight is actually being lifted by the athlete's own muscle.

The use of supportive gear has spilled over into mainstream gyms to the point where you have guys wrapping their knees as they check in. Or, using straps to get a Gatorade out of the machine. Sometimes, there can be an entire gym population that won't remove their lifting belts to take a dump.

What's wrong with all this? The most obvious downfall is that a whole generation of weight trainers has incredibly weak lower back intrinsic stabilizers because they use a belt for every movement. Some lifters seem to have grip strength like their arthritic grandmother because they use straps for everything from curls to putting on their Otomix shoes and Hotskins.

Blah blah blah. There are raw meets if you want to lift raw. And meets with equipment if you want to use equipment. So pick a meet and stop bitching.

what about the guy that benchpressed 900? there's a link to the video on the training board i believe...I'm not sure though, please clear this up for me.

It's the same guy. Gene Rychlak. He hit 885, then a couple weeks later 900.

I agree, and Im not a big fan of shortening the squat to a half squat, again to lift more weight. But its not a knock against powerlifting, if that appeals to you, go for it. But regular weightlifting (Olympic that is) is much, much more difficult. And like Slobberknocker said, there are raw meets and competitors, but theyre about as popular as the natural ones, lol.

I agree, people wear them for gains. It has gotten a little out of hand, lately. I would prefer if it was all raw. Not even a belt. Let the strongest lifter win. But if you want to compete against the best, you have to use equipment, because the best guys are in equipped federations.

Personally, I feel powerlifting is a shadow of what it used to be, much like boxing has become. it is so watered down with so many different federations with so many different rules and so many different records, hell, anybody who can flat bench a 45 lb olympic bar can probably go online and find a federation they can be a world record holder in.

For anybody except a select subculture to ever give a flying fuck about powerlifting and for the sport to ever be put on the map, there needs to be unification......one main governing body.

The equipment issue will never end, there needs to be 1 federation with 1 set of rules.

Personally I wish equipment and steroids were never invented, but they were, so if you want to be the best, you have to get with the program. Companies came out with lifting gear because they said they want to prevent injuries, they actually want to cash in, and in doing so have damaged the sport greatly.

I feel powerlifting is in bad shape, I'd like to see everybody with some pull in the sport put their fucking greed aside and do what is best for the sport, not their wallets.

As far as equipment, I think it is too late, people are used to seeing equipped numbers, the bar has been raised, there is no going back. I do think it is pathetic when people are more worried about cutting the back of their shirt, getting weight to touch, wrapping their knees, finding a brand of shirt to it, and breaking in a shirt, than they are lifting the fucking weight. To me a lift is a lift, plain and simple, a lift is not playing a fucking chess game with your equipment.

I am not knocking lifters who use equipment, they have no choice but to do so unless they want to compete in a meet with 1 other lifter that nobody cares about, I am knocking the current state of powerlifting that I feel was arrived at because of greed. I think it has forever ruined the sport and a person's chance to make money as a powerlifter, unless they get involved with supplements and/or equipment sales.

Nice post BBBD, and if you can't find a fed you can be a record holder in just start your own! In fact, last night I squatted a new WR in the fed I started this morning, the NAPLA (North American PowerLifting Assoc). Sound good? I just have to order up my trophy...:D
