I'll second hill sessions. I used to do quite a bit of long distance running, and I did a hill day at least once a week. I had a speed day and one long day as well. I kept weight training to high reps and long sets with lighter weight. I was never great but held my own. My knees can't take running anymore, and now even backpacking can cause some intense discomfort.
