Need help with video game software.

I had Counter strike (the retail version, not Half Life) installed on my old pc and I have lost the cd. I just installed the hard drive from that computer to my new pc. I have the drive that this comp came with as the master and the old drive as the slave.

When I tried to run the game, it asked me for the CD-key. The strange thing is that when the hard drive with the game on it is used as a master, it simply runs the game, yet when it is used as a slave, it refuses to run unless I have the cd-key. Are there any solutions to this, short of actually getting the cd-key or re-installing?

That game is funny with that CD key. If you don't have it you are screwed. It's not uncommon for programs on a harddrive that was a master not to work properly if you use it as a slave. I think it's something to do with the system folder but anyhoo. You can dl a full version of the game that doesn't require the cd key here. At least you used to be able to. check it out.

Yeah, you can download the full version of counter-strike only if you have half-life. I don't have the actual halflife software, I only have the counterstrike retail software.

Does anyone know if any cd key will work with my copy of the software or does each individual install need it's own cd key?

each game has it's own key gen. you're kinda S.O.L. Basically once a key is use no one else can use it. So maybe if you knew someone who was never gonna go online with the game you could use theirs. Or you could just rip open a game in a store and write the key down. It might work.
