Names! Does it affect you?

Debate continues over the naming of children. Give the baby a simple,

unaffected name, say some, so the child won't be handicapped by

"being different." No, give the baby a distinctive name, say others, so

the child will learn to emphasize individuality.

What's your stand on this matter?

Our names are extremely important. Your name is your life! It is how you identify yourself. It is how others identify you. The more insight you have into the powerful influence of your name, the greater opportunity to enjoy the success you are capable of achieving.

Mind and thought have their origin in an abstract plane of conscious intelligence, which comes into manifest form through the symbols of language. The brain is not the source of the mind, but merely the physical instrument of the mind. When a name is attached to an individual, certain specific forces of conscious intelligence are combined. They constitute the nucleus of the mind. The conscious forces combined by the name can be represented by a numerical formula in much the same way as the basic chemical elements combined in a chemical compound can be represented by a chemical formula, such as H2O for water. The mental characteristics of an individual can be read from the numerical formula representing the person's name just as the characteristics of a chemical compound can be read from its chemical formula. Regardless if you pick a simple or distinctive name, the baby name should harmonize with the child's inner potential.

I think it has a large effect on your life. It all comes down to perception. Look at how actors/actresses give themselves stage names. Or how writers use pen names, like J.K. Rowlings(Harry Potter) who chose to use her initials instead of her full name, sounds more serious than Joanne Kathleen Rowlings doesn't it? People have different perceptions of you simply based on your name, and since a large part of our self-identity is formed from the way others perceive you, names play a fairly large role in the formation of your self-identity starting early on in childhood.

Doesn't meant that it plays enough of a role to control anyone's life direction tho. After all, you can always change your name. :)

OHHHHHH touchy subject with me.....my son is a 4th and he has a very unusual name that I am SURE will cause him to get teased when he is older.

We gave him a nickname that is totally unrelated to him real name and people look at me VERY funny when I tell them what his real name is....

My husband has a lot of pride in his name and the fact that he's a 3rd and our son is a 4th so I didn't even attempt to fight it...

But I DO worry about him getting teased, I was teased unmercifully in school for being fat and I worry almost on a daily basis about my son having to go through the same thing for a name that WE gave him...

Whats the name? Sorry, inquiring minds want to know:)

I've got a very strange name- I guarantee none of you would have heard it before- and usually I have to repeat it several times to anyone I meet. But I like it a lot, and wouldn't change it for the world. In the end, the person makes the name, the name doesn't make the person.
