Congrats Blair---they dont need a good techy do they????
I don't need, nor want, to defend why I took this job.
In a nutshell, it's a great opportunity. Tobacco companies take care of their employees. Cigarettes are a legal product, and until it's made illegal, I have no problem being associated with it/them.
People smoke. Lots of 'em do. They always will.
If y'all haven't noticed, there are little warning labels on EVERY pack of cigarettes, just like alcohol, and, hmmm...steroids , warning of the risks...so, if one chooses to use such products, THEY are accepting said risks.
Preach on if you'd like, but the bottom line is: Although liberals like RyanH want Socialism to take this country over, we still live in a free market economy (to a point...), and consumers still have the right, along with producers, to make their own choices. But I guess the liberals will never understand that...
And neither will the people who still view Big Tobacco (along with Big "Anything") as evil, since they make a profit, legally. That always seems to be the constant with companies, and industries that liberals bash, isn't it?
Damn, I guess I am sort of defending myself, hahaha...

Take it easy. I;'m actually happy for you. I was just wondering if you had to do any soul-searching to align yourself with a product which costs NON_USING taxpayers billions every year.

I think there are plenty of conservative non smokers who are opposed to tobacco. After all what does is really do except get you addicted and promote all sorts of health problems? At least steroids help you get bigger muscles.
Matt: Trust me, that lil' "rant" wasn't directed at you, or any of the other intelligent, somewhat 'interested' responses I got! It was for the negative thoughts by the naysayers with closed minds

You know how I think--I'm a pure Capitalist...although I always see your points on SOME contols! I think 99.9999% of human beings KNOW that smoking isn't great for them...yet millions of them still smoke. Why not take advantage of that? "Take advantage" meaning, to me, taking a part time job while I'm still in school, with a multi-billion dollar international corporation?!
Again, I don't see me "defending" my decision. And to answer your question, I did have to do a bit of "soul searching," per se, but after talking to the friend who basically "created" the job for me, and to my direct supervisor upon interviewing, I realized that 1)you dont' have to smoke to work for 'em, since neither of them do, 2)they're a great company, 3)the pay/benefits are great, and 4)it is a good opportunity for someone as outgoing, and people-oriented as I am. Plain and simple.
It's funny how I get such different reactions from different people. My Dad sees it as a sales position, which is great for me. My Mom sees it as me selling cigarettes to unsusepecting people...go figure.
I'll keep you updated on how it goes/is going, for sure. I didn't know I'd stir up this kind of discussion

1) I hate cigarettes.
2) I think there should be more laws to restrict cigarette smoking in public places.
3) All things being equal, I'd have less respect for a smoker than for a non-smoker.
4) I don't "disapprove" of Blair's new job.
Why?
It's simple.
1) Cigarettes are legal.
2) Everyone knows that smoking is not healthy.
3) No one has to smoke if they do not wish to do so.
4) It's not "morally wrong" to smoke.
What is immoral about offering a morally appropriate product for voluntary use by individuals?
