my laptop died

I had told someone over the weekend that my laptop was like a tank and had served me well. I noted that I might have been tempting the laptop gods with that.

I got home this evening and my laptop died.

I peformed some emergency surgery on it and it is working now, but I'm not sure for how long.

So it seems that I might actually be getting a new laptop now. It would be no big deal were I in the States. I would figure out online what I want and then have it shipped to me in a week or less. I could even go to a store and get it right then.
But here... nope, can't do any of that. The laptops here suck.

I have in-laws (future) in Toronto right now and then they will be back in a week - I might have them bring me something in.

I found another HP one that I thought looked really good (1600x1200 resolution, 15.4" WSXGA+ and light and thing) - but I'm also considering the Mac Ti PowerBook (the new 15" - it has a crappy resolution and I will have to get adjusted to how it does things, and I won't have any graphics software for it, but it will have the new cooler processor - and I really want a cool processor after nearly burning my legs so much on this laptop).

This one I bought refurbished off of UBid. If I can wait until thanksgiving, I can ship it to my mom and then pick it up then. But I don't even know if this one will make it the rest of the week.

Fortunately I have pretty much everything on here that I need backed up - the rest is pretty disposable and just annoying to lose.

Consult with Testosterone Rob, he'll be able to give a sound advice!

I am considering the PowerBook - the issues that I need to do Photoshop stuff for my site and I don't have PS for the Mac. I also am not familiar with the layout of everything, so I would be slower using it.
For 90% of what I do, I need a web browser, I need e-mail (which can just be an ssh session if need be) and I need... well, a ssh session.

Ideally I have Perl on there and some sort of editor that recognizes Perl context highlighting and really ideally will let me debug it viusually - I use Komodo from ActiveState on this laptop - haven't looked to see what there is for Macs. I know that I can get Emacs for it - but not sure about XEmacs and whatnot.

Also, the bulk of my users on my site are not on Macs and therefore I would need to test the site on a PC anyway.

HP has a new 17" that has a full keyboard - even with the numeric part off on the right. It is still only the same screen as the Mac 17".

Don't know - I like the one I have, even if it is falling apart.
The built in network jack broke, so I put in a PCMCIA card that does the network - then after it died this evening, when I got it back up, the PCMCIA card died and the normal jack works.

The fan on the heatsink of the processor is screwed up and I can hear it weirding out now - which means it will likely die soon again. Ugh.

They make it pretty much impossible to get into the CPU and the heatsink/fan on here.

MacPerl is nice.
Emacs work on OSX, I think. Lemme verify that.
SSH work on OSX.

Back-lighting for the keyboard. Sexy as FUCK!

My laptop crashed while I was writing my response. Not sure if it was due to heat, or if the memory is either unhappy or not seated right from when I was fucking around with it.
It was the first memory dump I've seen it do since I've owned it. But it is also quite warm now as well and the fan won't go.

I'm pretty sure that Komodo is on Mac OSX now - I will have to look to see what else is out there.

I'm definitely considering it - I will just miss Office tools, which I can likely get Linux type stuff instead. And I will miss Photoshop - not sure if there is a Kazza type thing for Macs, but I would assume so.

It is just a matter of whether or not I have $3K or so in cash in my account right now.

MS Office for Mac OSX.
Or just like OpenOffice.

I have to decide if I want to spend at most $1500 before getting into the country and that is it, and get a sweet HP that is essentially like this laptop but better.

Or I could get a PowerBook and it would be cool looking, but I would have a learning curve, and no software.

I think I could use a lot of Linux type stuff and likely The Gimp - but it is going to cost 2x as much.

It is just so rounded and shiny.
