As a BB, the whole concept of this goofy lat spread thing drives me nuts -- I'm all like PULL IT OUT ! COME ON! PULL IT OUT MORE! in the audience, except what they are doing is "the pose" that the judges are looking for. It also depends on how you "wear" the pose itself as far as what gets the best exposure of the delts. I try to describe it like stand head up, but then feel like there are two strings attached to the highest & furthest out point on the shoulder and someone is pullign the strings up and out at the same time. But also let the arms hang down naturally from there - i.e. the only place where you are consciously paying attention to is the shoulders - not the elbows. And then from there, see how it looks from the front & back - may need to try rolling the shoulders forward or backward to get the biggest width possible on the back.
Lots of figure girls tend to make their elbows the pull point and then they just end up w/ this big round O shape vs the Y shape the judges are looking for. Another sign of not pulling correctly is if there is a slant down on the shoulders vs. straight across.
It really is an art form to get it right because it isn't a natural pose, but when you get it, it does look good.
Wow.. I just did those poses in the mirror and it truly is amazing how much different it makes your body look... Thanks for that post, that was very informative! Now i know how to walk at the beach..
