My experiment

I'm eight weeks out from my first comp (12 weeks out from the comp that REALLY matters), and as some of you know, I'm trying to come in at least 5 lbs. lighter for my May show than I was in Germany at the Worlds (based on judges' feedback), and potentially 8 lbs. ligher for the NABBA Worlds in June. I'm playing around with a few things diet-wise, but I also decided to try an experiment with my cardio, and only do HIIT cardio for this entire diet cycle. My cardio will include 100 and 200 meter sprints and 20 minute HIIT sessions on my eliptical trainer.

I'm doing this for a couple reasons: 1) I really don't like steady state cardio. 2) I'm starting a very large project on Friday which will seriously limit my time outside of work - and I like to sleep. 3) I have read very little (outside of anecdotal evidence) that justifies steady state cardio is less catabolic than short bouts of intense cardio. If anything, there is more evidence interval training is less catabolic and keeps your metabolism stoked for longer periods than slow steady state cardio.

I'm just starting to add cardio back in to my training regimen, so I will keep you guys updated with my results.

Hi JJ I did the same type cardio the last contest go around. Much preferred it over the steady state cardio. I still managed to lose muscle mass-if I had known then what I know now.... ( not in reference to the sprinting) In any case this should work well for you. Keep us posted and keep posting-valerie

Good luck JJ. May suggest you throw some 400m sprints in there too. :)

You know, I just read an interesting article by Christian Thibaudeau about 400 meter sprints. I used to be part of the mile relay when I was in track though, and sprinting a 400 still gives me the cringes. I still might try them though, just to see if I could actually do 3-4 400 meter sprints in a row. Without ralphing.

I was a 200 meter runner in high school. I ran the 400 a time or two and like you know there is NO PAIN worse than that of the quarter mile, but oh what it does for the glutes and quads. I regret not being tough enough to do the 400m......................................Two words. BUTT LOCK!

LOL!! Good Luck JJ!

BTW... BG when's the baby due?

I have no idea :) Well according to my first doc its May 7th, according to my second/current doc its MAy 30th (going by an ultrasound they did at around week 21 which makes it not as accurate). IMO I say sometime between the 10-20th. I can't wait to get it over with. Bring on the epidural.
