So when I got up in the morning the other day and turned on my pc to start a download I noticed my computer was incredibly slow. then I noticed no program could contact the internet, even while I had logged on to my provider, Internet explorer, Imesh, MSN messenger, all failed to recognise that.
Then I kept getting messages that my commands could not be executed because of a lack of memory. But I had no applications running!
Then one time I actually got an involuntary shutdown message with a countdown... I remember that one from when I had the W32 blaster worm.
I did a harddrive scan for errors. this didnt help. I wanted to download a virusscan program but of course I couldnt download anything. So I took my fathers laptop(which im posting on now), downloaded a recent virus program from download.com and moved it to my own comp using my MP3 player.
I used this program to clean up my harddrives, and it found a very large number of infected files which were all deleted. The source was clearly software I downloaded from a sharing program and didnt scan (dumb me).
It recognised all sorts of stuff. It was all over both my harddrives. trojans, virus's/virii, worms, I dont even know what all these things are, but my comp was full of them. I also ran adaware which removed about 50 objects.
Now every time I boot, I get the message that system32.exe could not be found. This is true, it was infected and therefor removed.
furthermore none of the past problems have been solved in the first place. I still cant use my connection and everything is still slow.
I don't know what to do. The logical reaction is to format the harddrives, but I have like 25 gigs of stuff I downloaded that was hard to find, not just something you pluck right off the net. I already backed up my mp3s on a burned DVD the other day, but I dont want to lose all my movies.
Also I dont even know if I still have the Win XP cd at home.
Does the fact I had trojan horse programs on my harddrive, mean somebody wanted to specifically target me?
