My cat is lovey dovey when I least expect it and usually when I want to go to sleep.

He's also all about affection when he wants more food or fresh cold water.

Oddly enough I have noticed than when I am not home a lot he's bitchy and if I am home a lot he wants to be next to me or on me.

I think cats might just be more bizzare than trying to understand the opposite sex for some people.
