When I was 15 I worked all summer to save up for a big ass JVC "box" that took 10D batteries (back then it was called a box, not a boom box or ghetto blaster)

We played that mofo to death, we danced, we pop, lock what ever! :magilicut
I would bring it in the dressing room before hockey games and play ACDC and the team got pumped. I threw that thing up on my shoulders and walked everywhere with it. Sometimes we would get in shit from the bus driver for playing our funk too loud.

I would let my rock friends put in their Led Zep taped and we would air guitar or drum or something.

fast forward to 2008 and all I see is people wearing ear buds and not even bopping their heads. hell they just sit there with a blank stare on their faces. WTF? I mean fuck stomp your foot or something man :elephant: :dance2: :lil k:

Well, when the songs are like "I wanna make love in this club" and some new random bullshit from Milie Cyrus can you blame them for not being enthused?

Am I just getting old or is the music starting to suck lately?

Don't answer that. It was a rhetorical question...lol.

Yeah top 40 fucking sucks. I haven't listened to FM radio in years. I actively search out new music through various blogs and websites, and most of the bands I enjoy will never see commercial success. There is some great music being made. You just have to look for it.

give it a couple of years love.
my 4yo yells "HEY HEY YOU YOU I DONT LIKE YOUR GIRLFRIEND"
That actually is my most hated song in the past ten years, EASILY. I made a thread on here when that song came out about how I want to murder Avril Lavigne for that POS song.

Today's music sucks ass big time. Rap is bullshit, the pop stuff is gay, the rock music is alright I guess.

Soulja boy is my hero! lol.

I know what you mean HD they just dont appreciate Marie and Donny Osmond anymore ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what is the world coming to ....lololol

I agree. It's almost like age of the zombies. The other thing though is there's hardly any good music anymore. It's all becoming more and more commercial and processed/formulaic, less like art. Soulless in a way and you can tell by the blank looks on most young peoples' faces when they listen to the music of recent times.

I'm doing my research project in grad school on a topic that is related to this phenomenon... in this case, there used to be a barrier between the commercial side of music and the integrity to artistic creativity side... what do I mean by creativity, but as the listener you can almost relate to the struggle of having to get across that unique emotion translated through a mysterious process of rhythm and sound, that is what we call soul.

Now, there is no barrier, the commercial side dictates what is produced, there is no one on the artistic side who has taste and an artistic capacity to determine what has soul... rather, mainstream music is market driven and the quality of music reflects that lack of soul or struggle there was in order to produce this music...

There is a genuine lack of emotion, feeling, substance, being, and this translates to shitty music... teens aren't moved by this no one is... you see this phenomenon through all aspects of culture, not just music... behind the ostensibility of choices... there is really the same commercial imperative behind it... to sell commodities.... :worried:

Actually, I think it's the ease of which they can download music and music videos - there's no commitment or loyalty to favorite bands.

I remember saving up for records (you know those vinyl disk thingies), begging for a ride to the record store (or cutting class to go to tower records) so I could buy so and so new album, rip off the plastic absorbing every word and photo on the cover and sleeve while playing every song over and over until I knew all the words and had made a few mix tapes for all my friends by day's end.

AMEN
What about listening to those University radio stations and taping the music LOL.
I use to spend my school money (sent from Daddy) on new records.

Now a days kids need to take a fuggin class to learn how to dance haha I registered my girls for a friggin hip hop camp :)

LOL me too!!!

I never had lunch money or grocery money.

I think it depends on the song and the group. For me, PE still stirs something about social injustice in me.

Maybe I'm a freak but music makes me move.
jazz
funk
r&b
hip hop
rock / heavy metal

I usually tap my foot or the steering wheel or bop my head or something.

Stop listening to the music US radio stations are force feeding you. And yes, you are force fed, through repetition. People think the shit that's played on the radio is being played due to its popularity and listeners requests. WRONG! While in college I worked at a radio station as an intern, the industry is disgusting.

These days music moves kids in very private ways, like when they're in their room alone crying and cutting themselves.

I can't comprehend not moving to music. I could never be a passive listener.

Oddly enough, I'm probably the last person in the US who's never had an Ipod or used electronic music. If I want something, I'll still get the LP.

:cow:

I have never owned a:
Walkman
Discman
Ipod.

I did buy one of those cheap mp3 players for running, cardio and flying.
I got on a flight from LA to Toronto and went to play the mp3 thing and I erased all the fucking songs :(

Long-ass-flight

when most of the music has no meaning it is easy to not be moved other than the beat behind it

If i can't bob my head or tap my feet to something - I will not listen to it.

Who killed hip-hop?

Same here. No iPod, no collection of stolen music on the computer. If I want it, I get the CD.

I also have yet to own a cellphone.

i disagree with the popular sentiment here

i think that the impassiveness we see is the availability of music, and the shift from speakers to headphones. back in the day if you wanted new music you either recorded it onto crappy tapes, or bought it (and who could afford that as a teen?), or listened to it on the radio, where you got to hear it once every 4 hours

these days you have your ipod, mp3 players, every car having some sort of disc reader and of course, personal computers - youtube, limewire etc etc - and so music has become less scarce, we thrash it by playing it over and over until it sounds tired - its no wonder we dont get as amped up at hearing a song

also, i think that theres LOTS of great music out there - its just that theres so much damn music out there that you have to sift through endless piles of crap to find good tracks

i also think that commercial music (heavily promoted) focusses too hard on remixing old crap rather than creating new sounds, but hey, thats jsut me :)

cheerios

Agree to a point GD.
I bought a lot of records as a teen and always got them for birthday and Christmas because my family knew I was a wannabe DJ. (Got my first mixer in 1980 + 2 turntables and a microphone)

Our cars always had 8 track then cassette.

I agree that there are NO creators in "pop" any more and FM only plays classic rock or 80's, 70's or what have you.

I started listening to rap in the early 80's when it was just dudes bragging about "Lincoln Continental and a Sun Roof Cadillac" but in fact they didnt even have it and everybody knew they didnt have one and nobody cared LOL.

Rap used to be fun or deep then it started to go down hill....anyway now I'm just blah blah blah ....

as you were people :worried:
