Motivation trouble after ACL

This sucks. I have had 4 surgeries in the last 18 months from football injuries. Up until now my motivation for rehab has been great but now, after my second knee surgury, I have ZERO motivation to get back in the gym and get back into shape. If any of you can relate to this, hook me up with a story or a picture or just a kick in the ass to get me back in the gym. I'm getting fat and my football career is over. :(

Man, that sucks. Sorry, I have no words of wisdom or personal experiences similar to this, but I can sure empathize with you.

This is one thing that these boards are good for, you can easily and quickly find others in similar situations and help each other out.

Good luck on the rest of your rehab.

You want a motivational story?

I have been in your shoes before and still am. I tore me ACL my freshmon year of football in high school. After 3 surgeris the doctor recommened and pleaded with me to not play sports. He says it just wasn't worth it. Now to some 6 figure doctor it may not have been worth it, but to a kid that is atletic, sports and pussy is all you really care about. Now this doctor is telling me not to because I physically can't.

At first, I got depressed and gained a lot of weight. I went from a lean 190 to a fat 220 in two months. I was pathetic. All my friends would go out and have fun and play sports while I did jack shit. Then one day I decided I was more than what some doctor thought I was.

I got off my ass and worked out intensly at the gym. I played football the next few years. My knee held up fine becaue I busted my ass. In the end I won a section title, a league title, all league 2 years, most valuable back in the league and recieved over 40 letters from school. Lastly, I was chosen to play in the Northern California Allstar game. I did what everyone said I couldn't do. I love it when someone says I can't do it. Then I have to go out of my way to prove them wrong.

With my ACL, I think it is one of the best things that could have happened to me mentally. Physically? NO, but mentally I am stronger than ever. I know that i can do whatever i decide I want to do and not what somoene else has decided for me.

You will get over it. If you work hard you will play football again.

Things happen and there is nothing you can do about them, but what you do with what happens to you makes you what you are.

It sounds like you might have a fucked up Q-angle in your legs. I majored in athletic training at college and helped one of the star linebackers wit his rehab. He tore his ACL three times over his 5 year career. His Q-angle ( the relationship of the greater trochanter, patella and tibial tuberosity was that of a female. Which means he was knock-need. One thing you have to remember is after having your own or someone else's patellar tendon inserted is that the tissue is dead. After surgery it is very tight causing stability. It takes several months for the blood supply to be transferred into the new ACL. Most people think there good as new and end up tearing thier ACL again before it heals. You may also have one leg shorter than the other that can cause this problem. Talk to your physician or trainer about this. Sometimes these can be corrected.

While playing college ball Blew out my knee and shoulder in one play...It sucked... had to train around both of them couldn't trained legs for awhile or chest shoulders...took time off...after a couple of month back in gym Trained upper body legs still no....But switching routine to 100's got me back in decent shape...Just keep on going it'll come back

Hey, I saw a buttload of those injuries in the land of the Big Red. It's amazing the miracles the doctors and rehab people can do these days. Never blew out a knee but had surgery for disc. Some advice:

1) Rehab rehab rehab. It sucks, but it works. Without it, you will never get 100% again.

2) With rehab, you WILL get 100% again. But, it's up to you. The only thing holding you back is your own fear (of tearing it again). That sounds stupid, but I saw more mFers after surgery afraid to lift and run again. That is what you are SUPPOSED to do!!!!

Good luck, bro!!

Thanks for your input guys. I appreciate it. I'm just about able to walk without crutches again so I'll get back to the gym soon. The hard part is sticking to a decent nutrition program.
