Metabolic study

Yesterday at work I did an interesting test on myself for shits and giggles. Did a metabolic study. It gave me an estimate of my resting energy expenditure for 24hours. In other words it told me at rest, the amount of calories I wound burn per 24hrs. It uses your respiratory quotient (co2 produced over o2 consumed) by monitoring inhaled and exhaled gasses. By my profile I should be burning around 1900 at rest. The study told me I'm burning around 2600. Gotta up my cals!

We usually do them on sick patients in the hospital. Pt on life support who can't eat on their own. It tells us what amount of fat, carbs, protein to feed. If we feed incorrect proportions we can change their RQ which could make weaning them off the life support harder.

It only takes 15 minutes but because it's reserved for really sick people it's expensive (in my setting).

You would have to find a nurtitionist (or respiratory therapist in some areas do them as well). Maybe a friend of a friend. I also do them to teach clinicians how to use the equipment. Maybe you can find someone to do a test on you that way. Call a nutritionist and see if they can lead you in the right direction.

I'd be interested in hearing results from tests on 2-3 weekdays as well as one weekend day to assess consistancy..

Time of day may also play a role.

Did the test x2 already results were the same. The results should be the same no matter what time of day you do it as long as it was done correctly, the subject lays still and even breaths like they normally do at rest. Even taking deep breaths throw off the results and give you results that are higher. I am going to repeat it again in a month and compare. will let you know.
