Massive Calves?

New member
i got some straight up chicken legs (i'm all upper body right now)......just a bit over 13" calves (i swear they just WON'T GROW anymore  ).....bicep is 14.5".....all natural (first cycle coming up)

anyone got some killer calf workouts they'd like to share? what leg workouts do yall do for massive gains?? (i will be soon starting deca400mg/test-e500mg a week....10 or 12 weeks)

26, m, 5'9", 40.5" chest

Mostly genetics bro. Keep trying, they will grow. I can't offer a w/o because I can get my legs to grow fairly easy. Put the deca in your calves!

you tried supersets or dropsets? how much you training them now? how many times per week?

right now just monday is leg day (MTRF-iron, WSS-cardio)....where should i incorporate another time in?
i do leg ext and leg curl supersets usually between 2 and 3 below:
(all last sets to failure)
1. squats 3x15 (after a few warmup sets)
2. deadlift 5x5
3. lunge 2-30lb db 5x5
4. standing calf raises 2-30lb db 3x30 or more usually if i can
5. sitting calf raises (155lb padded bb) 5x30
i may throw a good morning or two in there if i feel it....by this time, my legs are burning pretty good.....

(i workout at home, so i don't have a fancy calf raise machine.....i know i wish i had that leg press too....this also cuts down on my force-reps too, unless my neighbor decides to join in)

i don't normally do dropsets though.....maybe thats what i'm missing....

I'd do a little research on diet before you take the plunge. figure out what your putting in your body and make adjustments. food is the most anabolic thing you can put into your body.

WIth those measurements I don't think you need to be cycling.

Diet is your first place to look for ways to optimize...

Calves are a bitch in general - you're either born w/ em or you aren't. If you want to target them - a thought is to get into biking (e.g. spin classes) or sprinting. Other people can chime in on maybe hitting them 2-3 x/ week to see if that makes a difference as well.

yeah, my basal is around 2700 and this past year i've been in hypo-mode to shed some fattage (which did me well)......got the seaspure/glucR combo last month and just started back trying to maintain at least 3500 with around 260/140/100 prot/carb/fat macro-ratio......you think i need more carbs?

i would try supersetting and or drop setting twice per week. I used to hit them 3 times per week, although that may have been overkill.

i hear ya sassy.....that is a good thought about biking.....i have a bike machine i do my cardio on.....i do try to use the balls of my feet on the edge of the pedal and tighten my calves up....your definitely right about that!! that has sculpted them pretty good.....now i just need to pack on another inch or two ;)

i'm curious to hear what others think about getting her done 2 or 3 times/week.....

i appreciate the helpful advice and constructive criticisms!!

ok, yeah, i'm gonna try that then.....one of the days i can focus on dropsetting only do you think? or should i superset on that day too?

and where do you think i should add that in? on wednesday? or move my shoulder to saturday and do it on thurs? (so to make legs mon & thurs)

sorry hear that man. I have many friends with the same prob. its really about 80% genetics for sure.

I have 19" calves and rarely have to work them. in fact when I do train them hard, they hurt for extended periods of time... to the point where I cant walk properly for days. even having to walk on my toes for at times. lol

hit them heavy 2x a week Id say. your calves are one of those muscles you use pretty much all day, so training them 2x a week would seem do'able.

I Had The Same Problem . This Is What I Did LEG PRESS MACHINE TOE PRESSES (3X10 )/ DO ONE SET THEN RUN OVER TO THE SEATED CALVE MACHINE AND DO (3X10) ONE SET AND FIND ANOTHER CALVE MOVMENT LIKE STANDING RAISES (3X10 ) AND DO 1 SET ....... THEN GO BACK AND START IT AGAIN(NO REST) .WHEN YOUR DONE YOU WILL HAVE DONE 3 SETS ON ALL THE MOVMENTS AND YOUR CALVES WILL BE COOKED .DO THIS ONCE A WEEK AND GO AS HEAVEY AS YOU CAN ,AND I MEAN UNTILL YOUR ABOUT TO CRY .IF YOU DONT GET 10 REPS ON EVERY SET ITS OK ,JUST TRY FOR TEN . IT WORKED FOR ME ,MY CALVES ARE 18.7 INCHES COLD AND WHEN I STARTED THEY LOOKED LIKE I WAS WALKING ON MY HANDS "lol" OH BIKE RIDEING HELPS ALOT AS WELL ..GOOD LUCK

definitely overkill bro--wheres the recoup time--calves are the same as ever other body part they need time to regenerate

heavy-heavy-heavy and lots of stretching

also could try very steep incline treadmill work---15 degrees

My calves were puny too, I don't have good genetics...... However, my calves might be my best body part now..... 1st off, you need to join a gym and train them there, you won't get big calves working them at home..... The only way to get them to grow, is to GO HEAVY...... Heavy Calf Presses on a Leg Press Machine should be your main Tool..... 4 sets, and put as much weight on so you can only do 4-6 reps..... This might be as heavy as 800lbs, but you gotta do it.... This is important, I'm talking CAN'T PHYSICALLY DO ONE MORE REP OVER 6...... In between sets, do some non weighted calf raises till it burns like crazy.... Do 4 sets of these, and youre on your way to getting bigger calves......

you can work your calves everyday/ i work out with a standing calf raise with 500 pound selectorised weight stack i start out with 120 and go up i have been doing this for years and my calves are f--king huge. calves and abs can be done every time you work out now for hacksquat and legpress
and swingsquat i only do 2-days a week because those three machines take everything out of me.

i think your are totally right.....i do have a free membership to bodyworks from work that i could use and have before, but it gets so busy at the times i go that prompted me to just train at home.....i do agree though and really think i should AT LEAST go over there for leg workouts.....i really do need those machines!! i'm definitely gonna do this next leg workout over there and see how much difference it makes on my calf-pain......

thanks rizz and everyone.....

training calfs 2 times in one week is not overkill. like mon and thurs worked great for me.

Thats what I do. I train them once with my quads and again later in the week when I do hammys.

you watching me in my gym "LOL" thats what i am doing right now :mix: i changed my routine ........................... let you know how it goes :p

I have been trying to beat genetics in this sense for years during cycles. My "weak" muscle is my pecs, everything else grows quick. But with the calves, i had good luck doing low reps with heavy, heavy weight for a few months, then trying to redefine them. They seems to be used to the weight since they carry you around basically. I was maxing them out for 4 reps over a bunch of sets until i couldn't walk.

Ever seen any fat people with small calves. I haven't. Its because their calves have to carry around that heavy weight 24-7. Train them heavy and hard.
