Married or once married dudes....(or ladies)

What did you spend on an engagement ring?

Less than a grand. It was all I could afford at the time. Now 19 yrs later my wife won't take a replacement, she is all sentimental about the original.

It depends on what she likes. My hubby actually tried to buy me a bigger ring than what I wanted. I couldn't have any sharp edges because I am a paramedic and a big ring would have been ripping my gloves at work. Didn't want blood on my hands. Ick.
BUT I still ended up with a really nice, quality ring. It was around 4600 or so.
Right before the wedding, I had to go without my engagment ring for about 2 weeks so they could have my wedding band added for the wedding. When he came home from dropping off my ring for the band to be added, he brought me another ring. It was small and cheap...but he said he didn't want me to go a couple of weeks without a ring. It was really sweet. Its the thought that counts.
As far as the wedding, my dad dropped a ton of cash on it. I just got lucky. I would never spend a lot on a wedding.
My parents were married at a friend's house....durring half time of a hockey game...by a friend that happened to have a license to marry people. My dad was really busy as a new lawyer and said he couldn't find time to get married. They have been married 36 years. I know people that had huge, expensive weddings(like mine) and were divorced after a year or two. People make the wedding a good one, not the money.

Incidentally, some girls like other gemstones, i.e., sapphire, ruby, emerald, opal, every bit as much as diamonds. Personally I think diamonds are overrated.

Agreed. Plus, some women don't like big, flashy things.

The 'tradition' of giving a diamond wedding ring was the result of the biggest marketing/branding/monopolizing scams in history by De Beers.

The tradition of the diamond engagement ring is a bogus one. It's a tradition that De Beers invented in the 1930s. De Beers spent big money on marketing, and worked with Hollywood to place diamonds in romance movies.

Learned of this taking a marketing class a while back.

I dropped 9000 on my wifes. Platinum with almost 3 carats.
Would I do it again? No....
My advice don't get married....its a lose lose situation...if you have to get engaged to please her do so but do not get married....I drug mine out for 7 years before she finally conned me into the day...even with a prenup I will still end up losing

Does your wife know you feel this way? Does she dislike you too?
