Malware! Got wiped out while here last week!

I'm not sure it originated from EF, and I in NO WAY accuse the site or the Powers that Be of knowing anything about it. So no offense here... Just a heads up and wanting to know if anyone else is in my boat. I was in the middle of typing a reply last week, and WHAM! I got a million pop-ups (fake Windows security stuff, forceful offers to sell me anti-virus software, and etc), and my computer locked. It was so badly corrupted by whatever I got, that I couldn't even open Task Manager. RegEdit and MSconfig were disabled, and my XP files were altered beyond repair. I bought a new hard drive, and started out fresh now on Windows 7.

Did anyone else get anything like that here? It happened Tuesday night or Wednesday morning last week.

Porn links = unsecure

not here, but that stuff is everywhere. Don't use IE.

Yeah, what he said, lol. And if you absolutely have to for some reason, put it in the InPrivate setting under the tools menu and set the security/privacy bars to high.

I'm getting a malware warning here every page I go through here right now

I use Firefox, but I noticed that the bug opened IE without my knowing it. I also didn't go to any links that day or in the week prior. And no porn sites from that computer... Wife & I share that one.

We got hit at my work with this one and it's severe. We have all the firewall stuff but it came in on a DL and helped itself spread. It leaves a trigger in the sys files and after cleanup when you restart it goes active and tries to DL all it's missing files again. It took an outside IT rep to clear it.

should've taken it to ortiz; he could've fixed it in his sleep

YES! The same thing happened to me when I was on this site. It scared the SHIT out off me. Like you said, "viruses" popped up all over my screen and some site called "Spy Tool" popped up trying to get me to buy their program to get rid of the "viruses". No way was I going to give them my credit card number. I turned Off and back On my computer and the screen was black. Fortunately, I could get to my programs and ran malware. It found 3 viruses and my computer worked again. Thank God!!

Thanks for the replies, bros... I think I'll pull out my Mac notebook and use it for here for awhile when I get back to California. Right now I'm on the Android browser, which hasn't (that I know of) gotten anything. But it's a PITA to use a cellphone for visiting a forum.

yeah, Im getting something in here now myself

norton keeps blocking it

this shit still happens to me everytime.

should we assume that most EFers don't have virus protection, or they just don't care?

yes we have virus protection, yes we care because it's annoying when one of your favorite sites gets an annoying pop up, EVERY single page you load w/ a virus warning
plus it's really steering me clear, I've just been popping in to see if the issue is resolved.

what browser are you guys using? I've never had warning like that with AVG and Zone Alarm running at all times. I use firefox or google chrome....

I need to update my CC info for my plat membership, but I'm a little hesitant to do so with this malware situation... I hope this gets fixed soon.

I'm seeing the alert as soon as I go to the home page. It's the Justice dept. looking into Shrimps asian smuggling activities.

Some of us are smart enough to use Linux/MacOS and don't really care what happens to the minions.

I'm still getting a network shield warning warning of a virus

drop the AVG Chewy, I have no idea why it's rated so good. It doesn't suck, but there are a few other superior freebies out there.

Download Avast 5.0 home from cnet

I'm back, but treading lightly. Windows 7 with Windows firewall on, and with Firefox. I'll post if I see anything weird. When I got it, I was in this forum just replying to a post, and everything froze up and the popups came. The bug was so deeply installed, that it had messed with the BIOS on the laptop! And it had installed a new partition on my hard drive that had several GB of data that nobody can identify, only that it would immediately go online and start uploading at huge rates without Windows any browser being open.
