Hey guys,

One of my friend's son is graduating HS this June.... He doesn't want to put in 4yrs at a college right now but does want to get some kind of education... He is looking into going to trade school...

He doesn't know for what though. He want to do something where he can make some good dough ( 80K and up) Do you guys have any suggestions...

i know lots and lots of people in trades who make more than 80k, and with only a couple of years experience. off the top of my head:

plumbers: most guys on no less than 220 a day working for someone else locally, 330-400 a day working rurally, and upwards from that working on their own

electricians: same deal pretty much. obviously more money contracting, even easy stuff like wiring houses.

tilers: minimum 250 a day these days, sometimes more if you contract.

boilermakers: i know a guy on 60 bucks an hour out on a few mines - he takes a paycut to about 250 a day so that he can work locally and go out on weekends looking for girls

anyone getting into a trade should do as many courses on taxation and running a small business as they can, and they can step into making a very good living, because really, most guys running various businesses in trades are utter morons when it comes to even simple economics. get a guy with a brain, a trade, and a desire to work, and you get a millionarie around here. one guy i know makes 750k a year from rental income alone, because he works hard and pays attention. prick. bastard. poofter. i tell him so every time i see hiim ;)

Williamson Trade School in Media, PA is a great school. They offer Masonry, carpentry, and more. The first two are the only ones I'm sure of because those are what I considered going for before I enlisted.

There's a few catches to the school like not being able to have a car on campus, and shit to that extent. I never got too deep into looking in there, but my votech teacher was all about getting me in.

I went thru sheetmetal apprenticeship, around 50-75k depending on time worked. As soon as my hands get a little better im going back. Got too much shit going on now for a stupid job anyhow.

Why can't you have a car on campus?

I went to a tech/trade school for computers (networking) when I was 19 and found out my girlfriend was pregnant...got a job after 6 months of school and have been working in that field ever since (4 years)...I dont know about 80k off the bat, but I got near that within the first few years thanks to certifications/etc.

He should join a Union local and get his school paid for...for example, a union carpenter in NY gets about 70 an hour (including benny's and a pension)...a good rout to go plus the schooling is free

wants to make $80K and up quickly with no 4-year degree....I want some of what he's smoking.

with trades, there is usually an apprentice--->journeyman-->master path.

A seasoned journeyman can make that kind of money. In some states, such as NY, unions are very powerful and can get high salaries. But again, it is seniority based...so for example, IronWorkers can make $40 per hour, but they start at $16 for three years.

His best bet is to learn framing and masonry, and to become a GC in a state where unions are weaker.
