Luckily we don't have this problem anywhere else in the US.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine's blunt-speaking governor is again creating a ruckus with his off-hand remarks — this time by calling state government middle managers "corrupt."
At a public town hall-style meeting in Newport on Thursday night, Gov. Paul LePage told the crowd that state government is too big and too costly, and that the state's workforce is part of the problem.
LePage went on to say that "middle management of the state is about as corrupt as can be."
Maine State Employees Association President Ginette Rivard called LePage's comments "baseless and insulting" to all public workers.
Since taking office last year, LePage has rankled various constituencies with remarks about labor unions, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the president.

Govermnent exists to serve itself and grow. The goverment has no competition and no incentive or reason to reduce itself or become more efficient

Lots of mean-spirited conservatives up on this thread.

What about the children??? Think about the children!!!!

It's always interesting for calls to cut the government. The question is...what do you cut? For every choice, there's a sob story against it.

However, having the governor call the middle managers as corrupt as can be is a "play to the crowd" generalization. Expected, but disappointing when life is portrayed as black and white.

It's like when someone calls women stupid or makes racial comments. Not quite the same degree, but the generalization is obvious.

The post office alone lost 10 billion dollars.
10 fucking billion dollars...
Ups and FedEx are MAKING millions of dollars.
The post office is a microcosm of the whole system.
Ron Paul gets it, the others do not.
The one guy that would probably do a better job of the 2 really left would be Romney, but since he is in bed with the defense spending (offense spending) he is actually the worst choice.
OBama will be re-elected I am guessing. 4 more years :(

-250B from Defense
-300B from Medicare/Medicaid
-250B from Social Security
-71B eliminate Dept of Education
-17.5 (50%) cut to Dept of Energy
-75B (50%) cut to Dept of Agriculture
...

I could put is at least $200B in the black even in this shitty Obama economy.

The Post office doesn't cost Taxpayer ANYTHING.

You'd lose too if you charged 45¢ to deliver a letter to a rural house in the middle of India. (Most of the United states is Rural btw.)
Although they have ran efficient enough to do so and stay profitable prior to my next statement.

Post office is going broke because of Legislation that is forcing them to pay 75 years into the futures retirement plan in a 10 Year stretch.

Name me a company that does this and remains above water.

All private companies are required to properly recognize future liabilities on their balance sheet. There's definitely some gamesmanship associated with the calculation, but they have to recognize it.

The federal government is the only place where you can rack-up unimaginable liabilities and not recognize them. That's why we have around $62 Trillion (it's probably more now) in debts that aren't on our books.

The post office is forced by law to partially recognize some of its future liabilities, but it's still not the full amount.

So yes, the post office does cost the taxpayers money. And if they don't, then they should cut me a several billion dollar check from the same pool of money they're drawing from.

75 years worth of retirement?

You said they "do" take Taxpayers $ then say "If they don't" ???
either you know they do or you don't................... And you don't.

And the Post Office hasnt taken a red cent of taxpayer money since the early 80's. And have Ran successfully and paid ALL retirements, until the legislation.

Government actuarials for health care costs are currently based on $1 paid for $3 of benefits, even after the time value of money is taken into consideration. That's why Medicare is breaking the US in such a spectacular way.

But since I'm a bastion of compromise, let's reduce the time frame to only 25 years, but do so at the correct dollar-for-dollar rate. Fair enough?

Post office pays for nearly all of the healthcare costs of its member through FEHB.

Post Office Created 1775. Employs 600,000 people directly, keeps MILLIONS employed with their service.
Largest Vehicle fleet in the WORLD.
200 Billion letters processed and delivered a year.
Aid in 1 Trillion dollars of commerce.
a billion miles driven a Year.

They were running FINE until 06.
Then they got railroaded.

It would be fair if they weren't getting fucked.

It sounds like a great idea to turn that over to Contracted mailers for triple the cost. :faint:

To everyone that complains about the Post Office. And wants it gone

Just label your mail box - Fuck you Mailman and Fuck Your Job. I hope you lose it.

See how that works out for ya.

jus say'n

I love My mailman,

The were running fine until they were forced to recognize future liabilities.

But even then, they were allowed to stretch 1/3 the amount over 75 years and still couldn't survive.

Let's focus on something we both agree on. Is it fair to say that with the rapid decline of mail use and the incredible advancements in technology that at least a good (i.e. 10%-20%) downsizing is in order?

I'd say let them run how they need too. They are self sustaining and since technology has lowered their use, it's up to them to do what they need.

LOL, let the "Market" decide their size.

The market plus a few billion/year from taxpayers is deciding their size now.

I steer clear of any investment that isn't viable with a monopoly and a bottomless pit of taxpayer cash.
