LP vs. Hack....

The basic squat is my foundational leg lift...but I typically supplement with the leg press and/or the hack squat...both Oly. sled types....

The LP seems to take some heat in this forum and I was wondering why....

Is the hack any better? Seems to be a little harder on my knees (I go almost knees to chest on both- - - bad?), especially in the patella tendon area...

I can get a little flare on the LP....I think this helps...

Should I avoid either or both, or just mix em' up like I've been doing?

I would stick more with the squats first of all then supplement with LP. I just can't get the hang of hacks and yes they are hard on the knees.

IF you want to focus on your quads throw in some moderate leg extensions (don't go super heavy on these) one leg at a time, maybe front squats or front squats on the smith (the only type of squat the smith is good for) and lunges. Man those lunges with fuck up your legs at all kinds of angles that squatting just won't hit.

Amen, recouping from lunges myself. Awesome addition especially to a 5x5 routine. I will disagree w/ Hacks however. The one things hacks do is work somewhat on your stabilizers. More moving parts on a hack movement. If you look at the motion of someone doing hacks it is about the closest excersize that resembles the squat.

I favor hacks..But lets face it if you feel like its going to kill ur knees that dont do them..Hacks are known as an exercise to wreck knees..but i love 'em..

I think the leg press is underrated. Almost every barbell movement for quads puts a big stress on your lower back. Well what if you just did deads 3 days ago and aren't ready to hit squads? Should you let your quads wait, growth-free, while your lower back gets up to snuff? Hell no, hit the leg press.

They are both excellent moves and IMHO feels it comes down to personal preference, aka, instinctive training. If a particular move bothers a particular joint your body is telling you something. The body is real good when it comes to communication.

You know the old story.....Jimmy goes to the doctor. Hey doc...it hurts when I do this. Well stop doing that Jimmy.

For whatever reason......Flat barbell bench presses has always bothered my shoulders but dumbell flat benches do not. Guess what barbell exercise I do not do ? Give up ? :)

Pump on .....

Thanks guys....I'll keep mixing it up...

There's a big-leg guy at my "club" (God, I hate that word...I'd call it a gym if it was remotely close but it really isn't)...he does lunges w/excellent form and he does them HEAVY...this is another exericse I know nothing about, think I'll approach him for some help...
