im looking to take up in either martial arts, kickboxing/boxing, or wrestling. anyone got any suggestions on which would be the best? im a fairly big guy so i dunno how i would fair in martial arts, but i can always give it a shot.

Depends what you want to do. If you want traditional karate go with something like Shotokan or Kyukushin (Okinawan karate). If you want a flashier style then something like tae kwon do. Then of course there is boxing, wrestling or judo, etc.

What specifically do you want to achieve?

i want something that is functional in life (i.e. if i need to use it it will help a lot) and also something that will help me get in good shape and increase my cardiovascular strength as well as physical strength.

Boxing

Muay Thai

Brazilian Jui Jitsu

Krav Maga

Wrestling (folk, greco roman, freestyle)

If you are lucky you might find a good SBGi in your area.

I side with BRR on this one. I'd also ad that, while how the instructor runs class is everything, I think the stand up striking arts like boxing and muay thai will help the most with conditioning as they tend to be the most demanding.

However, they can be hard to participate in full bore if you've got any kind of white collar job or similar responsibility where black eyes and bloody lips might be held against you. Not saying it doesn't happen in BJJ or Wrestling, but I'd say it happens much less often.

big guys should get into judo IMO

i would definately recommend that no matter what you go check out a few different classes before you join any one gym/dojo

the way the class is structrured, the students and the instructors can greatly change the way a style is taught

for example.. most people think judo guys dont do much groundwork.. which is true at a lot of schools .. however my last 2 instructors but focused heavily on groundwork and both instructors IMO were LIGHT YEARS ahead of the other grappling instructors/schools so i stuck with them

but i have to plug judo especially for big guys and especially if you would think about competing down the road

its fun you will meet good people, generally there are no attitudes, its a fun safe life long sport, throws look cool and are fun, chokes are cool, armbars are awesome..

sorry i am just totally addicted to it in every way..

and i have a tournament in less then 72 hrs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you, I'm sorru I forgot to mention Judo... For some reason in my head I lump Judo in with Greco Roman Wrestling...

Yeah bro, Judo is the shit!
