why do you recomend Judo for big guys?
I am 270 lbs big and have been wanting to get into Judo some

if you have that competive drive and your 270 and athletic you can accomplish a lot in a much shorter time then say someone 170lb

most big athletic guys are into football you would rarely fight anyone with the same amount of MUSCLE mass

you will do great so long as you learn JUDO first and then use your size/strength later down the road.. a lot of wreslters make this mistake .. they come to judo and see that they could do well right from the get go but all they do is wrestling and that gets stale real quick in JUDO you have to play by our rules (im talking sport here not self defense) and if you dont learn judo you wont do too well in the sport

however when wrestlers take there time and learn judo first then use that to modify wrestling techniques they take off and normally do very very well

judo is all about phsyics, leverage, momemtum, angles, etc it is not based on strength. it took ju jitsu techniques which relied more on strength and overpowering your opponent to create an advantage and modified them so that with proper technique and application a smaller man could defeat a larger man more easily.

also having a 270'er who is in shape with a good attitude(respect/safety/no ego) is an INSTANT asset to any club because you can give any 133lb-178lb guy a great workout from teh beginning just because of your size and strength.

if you want to learn more about judo, see some vids or need help finding an instructor PLEASE feel free to PM/email or just start a thread.

Good luck

I would like to get into Judo but I think I shoudl wait until I have more menoy (I assume the instructors will want me to pay them lol)

I'm somewhat athletic
I'm not like 270 ripped or anything
I have a noteable gut but I'm pretty strong and I'm not too tall so most of the other Judo students at my weight would probubly be taller then me
a friend of mine is going to instruct me in some MMA style stuff
I'l add Judo to that at some point I'm just not sure when

kane fan, im 270 also, 6'5". if i get into a martial arts i will not only be heavier then most, but taller then most. people look at me and guess about 230 pounds, i think its becuase i have very muscly arms and shoulders, plus a 17" neck. all of my fat is in my chest and stomach, which sucks. i think Judo is the best resort for people our size. judo or wrestling.

actually at 6'5 you'll have some problems in Judo because of the emphasis on throws
you have such good range you should consider a standup style
not to limit yourself to one styole you should have grappling and stand up ability unlessyou are just in it for fun, but your range at 6'5 is going to be awsome
you should consider boxing
but at 6'5 your center of gravity would be near my head or so, so my center would be below yours
but that might not be a hinderence to you that might be a benifit to me being not too tall, a lot of people at 270 might be nearer your height and it may not really impact things
but either way you should have some standup ability as well as grappling and boxing would work well or you cus you could jab people to a decision in a boxing match
of course they can work in on you but you may as well work with what you got

well the reason i want to get into something like Judo is because i have a long torso and lots of power. my center of gravity is lower then most people my height and i dont have good speed.

Although it's important to find a style that's right for you as an individual, be careful to not sell yourself short. In particular, "speed" as a concept is trainable and is something you'll develop as your fears diminish, as you learn to relax and as your timing improves.

You may not actually like Judo because "lots of power" isn't necessarily what's used to perform techniques. Heck, maybe you'll need to shop around to find the right Judo school for your preferences. There are some which are harder than others I'm sure. Maybe I'm wrong and power is in fact used in some places.

Working with things like center of gravity, length of limbs, height and weight is a good starting point.. but it's much more important to enjoy the training and like working with the teacher and student body.

there are some really powerful throws that people with long legs can utilize in judo.. now they might be different then some of the throws i would use as a shorter player but some would be the same..

some of the tallest elite players use throws that are normally reserved for short guys because the tall guys they fight are not used to defending those throws from big guys and dont expect those attacks..

lee i really think you should go check out a school and see what you think.

if you want anymore info on judo or places to go research judo please let me know.

good luck
