L-Glutamine

Okay, I was thinking of buying a thing of L-Glutamine from Netrition.com for 46.95, 200 servings per contained. I'm currently bulking though, and wasn't sure if it's useful for that still, or really only for stopping the catabolic effect of cardio during cutting.

5gs is a serving... how many servings should I take a day? I know at least one post-workout.

The simple reason for the above statement is because glutamine has to get into the blood stream one way or another.
As we know, roughly 61% of the AA pool in the blood is glutamine. That is approximately 5g of amino acids in the blood at one time. In addition, close to 90%(probably more) of the ingested glutamine is destroyed by the stomach acids. After the beforehand fact, it is probably safe to assume that not even 1% gets to the blood--less I imagine.

The immunological boosting properties can be explored, I am one of the people that saw this early on and started getting the "ANIMAL" glutamine created by the infamous Animal. What the major contribution in the mix is Potassium Citrate, which should act as a buffering agent. A more prominent way to do this is by adding baking soda to the mix with Glutamin; thus, creating a stomach acid buffer and, maybe, increase some absorption.
 
I've read a few studies on it as well... didn't specify the percent estimated to reach muscles, but it was so minimal it didn't make a difference anyway. IMO BCAA'a are better for catabolism.
 
What are BCAA's and are they expensive? Where can I get 'em? Good for use post-workout even during bulking or just when cutting (with all that cardio)?
 
BCAA= Branched Chain Amino Acids

Expensive? No

BCAA's are building blocks od muscle mass and size... they assist other aminos in repair and rebuilding.

hey, if glutamines keeps my immune system up and thus keeps me in the gym more often, i would have to say its a pretty damn good supplement.

Glutamine stimulates the synthesis of endogenous Proteins within the Muscles, thereby facilitating Muscle Growth (i.e. it is anabolic). Glutamine can also prevent the breakdown of Proteins within the Muscles (i.e. it can prevent catabolism) during intensive Exercise. L-Glutamine taken orally is not as effective as some want us to believe :)
 
That is why I snort my glutamine through a dollar bill.

But seriously it would seem as if soreness goes away quicker when I am using it.
 
nubrain.... no one is debating that... the problem is getting it into your system, and Simon Keller, if you dont like the board then leave. Negative comments are unneccessary... btw did anyone ever try injecting glutamine?
 
Hello to all. I am quite curious as to wether L-Glutamine is actually good or not. It sure would be nice to see hard scientific evidence published by real scientists, and data collected from normal exercising human beings and not just burn patients that get their L-Glutamine given to them intravenously. Just a thought. I will look around for this myself and if I can come across it I will post a link. How does this sound to everyone?

I don't need scientific journals to tell me it works. I feel it. I heal quicker, don't get sick when on it, and I feel better in the morning when I wake up. :) great supp

Sure the placebo effect works on a lot of crap. sell soemone dog crap, have them convinced it works and they will add 25 lbs to their bench!!! What I am saying is we should not get caught up in this supplement folk lore and blow hard earned money on something that does not work.

The only way to confirm that something works is through the scientific method and by having hard proven, and published facts, otherwise you are just pissingg dog crap up against the wall.

Hmmm my earlier statement sounded a little more ignorant than I'd like ;). Believe me I understand the importance of scientific testing because you absolutely right about that issue. However I still feel somewhat confident in what I said because I'm not the typical supp taker. I'm not one of those people who think, oh wow look what the label says it does it must be wonderful, type people. When I started taking glutamine the results weren't from me wanting to believe that it worked.
