kurt cobain 10 years ago today

As a musician extremely overrated. IMO

Or maybe i was too old to understand the whole grunge movement.

calling him a "musician" is an insult to real musicians and singers throughout history.

People wouldn't so proud of the grunge movement if they actually took the time to find out WHY Kurt killed himself in the first place. Ever wonder why the grunge scene died so quick???

Say what? He knew 2 chords I'll have you know and could bust out rhymes like "mosqueto, Danny Devito".

Now that dude that played the drums....there's a no talent bum.

That's true.

Back then he was to young boys what Jordan Knight from NKOTB was to young girls. Larger than life idol, and basicly that's it.

Maybe this actually belongs in the conspiracy thread, but I heard on the radio today about some guy(s) who wrote a book 10 years ago and are releasing another one today which suggests that he was murdered by his wife...

i love Kurt's letter to MTV just a few weeks before he killed himself:

"Dear Empty TV

The entity of all corporate Gods. how fucking dare you embrace such trash journalism from an overweight, un popular at high school, cow who severely needs her karma Broken. My lifes dedication is NOW to Do Nothing but SLAG MTV and Lynn Herschbers who by the way is in Kahoots with her lover Kurt Loder (Gin Blossom drunk)! We will survive without you. easily the old school is going down fast fuck face.

Kurdt Kobain
professional Rock musician"

In a nutshell, he was SICK of being used as a pawn for them. A puppet for them to make money by trivializing him as something he wasn't. They would tell him to go on TV and act "this way and that way, and dress grungy" and he'd always tell them to fuck off. Making him further depressed. Of course being married to Courtney didn't help things either. A glorified groupie slut out for fame and cash.

So he killed himself. Record companies freaked out that fans might follow soon and lawsuits might develop. Therefore, depressed Grunge bands and music become a liability so record companies dropped them ALL. Then came harder pissed off rage against machine kinda shit. etc. etc. etc.

Of course, jerk-off record companies didn't want to get blamed for his suicide, so they started dropping rumors that perhaps he was murdered. Now of course, eveyrone wants to believe he was happy and treated well by his record company, and it was some money-hungry wife that did it.

Well, their contention is that he was injected with 3x the leathal dose of heroin, and the shotgun he supposedly killed himself with handn't a fingerprint on it even though he and others had just handled it a few days prior.

Regarding the comments on Cobain's musicianship, or lack thereof, who cares? He wrote some good tunes, and performed them well enough to get the point across. There's more to rock & roll than just fretboard pyrotechnics.

I was in south miami catching Iguanas. I remember the day perfectly. Not really a big fan but I did get to see them live just a few months earlier.

I don’t see why you guys have to get on here and start talking trash. one or three cords, it doesn’t matter, he created hit after hit and started something new, whether you like it or not he is one of the greatest musicians ever. It’s not supposed to sound like joe satriani. it’s grunge music. It’s like saying baseball isn’t a sport, football is.

Technically... I agree that Kurt Cobain was not up to par with Zakk Wylde or Yngwie (or whatever the fuck his name is)... but Cobain wrote so many good songs. You can take a Nirvana song and translate it to many types of musical styles and it still stands up. Many so called "real" muscians couldn't write a meaningful song if their life depended on it.

Also, at the time the Seattle sound was different than the Ratt, Cinderella and Warrant that were plaguing the airways... so it was refreshing to hear something different. Also... to say the "grunge" scene is dead is asinine. Maybe the bands that spawned it are for the most part defunct... but music changed permanently from that poing on... bands like Rage, Deftones, Korn, Tool and a slew of others benefitted from those bands breaking into the mainstream. All in all it opened the door for something a little different.

In my opinion, the "grunge" scene really started unofficially with Guns N Roses... but what that fuck do I know.

Hmm, to me GNR has more in common with the corporate hair metal scene than they do with the grunge music sound.

Nirvana's "new sound" was heavily influenced by The Pixies, The Replacements, and The Meat Puppets.

Every one has their own opinion of what is a meaningful song. To some his work meant something and to others absolutely nothing.

Some people like him, some don't. Bottom line, he was a successful man who died way to early. To all the people who talk shit, the man is DEAD so please, have some fuckin respect!

Max Martin wrote hit songs to Britney, BSB, Celine Dion etc. etc. etc. but don't hear anyone calling him a greatest musician ever. Anyway, it's not about how many hits you make, it's about to who you make them. Are the listeners 11yo-17yo. teenagers or +25 year old grown-ups.

Kurt didn't start anything new, MTV started something new. Bands like Pixies started something new.
