I Have pretty Extensive training with the Bat Daam Jo , wich are litle more than Long Knives used in Pairs . I also have Sword training , so Im pretty good with the Slicing . I also come from the Islands , so Ive been attacked with Blades while I wasnt Holding anything a couple of Dozen times , and my Career as a Hand/Forearm Model is shot because of it .

What I consider a MUST read on the Issue ...

i did some training a while back with this old fillipino guy.. shit was very precise, almost like boxing but with a knife. very tight movements.. and very brutal, almost every move was taught to finish your opponent. even with my limited training.. about 2-3 months, i'd estimate that i'd have at least 3 to 1 odds of beating someone in a knife fight who isn't trained. however, i don't carry a knife (or any weapon) but if somehow i get put in a situation involving one i'd be fairly confident that i'd make it out alive and in tact. i believe the style he was teaching me was kali and offshoots of kali.

heh, at the end of the day, we all got to fly our colors some time so here goes...respect to all styles but i flat out believe that the filipino systems are the final word on knife and stick. Period!

Was privileged to learn some espada y daga from a Filipino friend of mine. Sometimes it gets to the point where, if you knew just who you were dealing with, you'd rather drop the knife...

I've had some knife training and I have had some knife self defense and I feel if I need a knife I will just take it from the other person trying to use it on me. Then I'll cut them up. Just me though.

In hapkido we dissected knife fighting from every angle we could think of. After every lesson we would discuss what we learned and each time the answer was the same. Although you may win against a knife attack the severity and frequency of injury is not worth it. I will only get in a knife fight if there is imminent danger to my wife or kids.

I just started doce pares ( www.docepares.com ) eskrima which is filipino stick and knife fighting 3 weeks ago and also did an amok! ( www.knifefighting.com ) knife fighting seminar last weekend.

I finally decide to do some weapons training, not because i want to use them, but so the next someone pulls a weapon on me i can disarm them, beat the shit out of them then stick it up their fucking ass.

For all you kali/escrima/arnis enthusiasts, I would recommend Filipino Martial Culture by Mark V. Wiley.

It is a truly, truly amazing book which gives an in-depth historical/social/religious background to the Filipino systems and also, loads of very interesting auto-biographical accounts from past and present maestres. Particularly gripping is some of the esoteric-bordering-on-spooky elements which are very much there under the surface...

Fav quote: ''One time I got clipped from a bayonet... I cut the hip of the bayonet thruster and then the triceps of the one with the sword...after that I just kept charging...''

i dont have time to study an art for knife self defense or offense im just looking for basics. if weapons get involved things are very dangerous and IMO it would take years and years of training for me to feel very confident in defending myself against anyone w/ a knife. but regardless i want to try to cram in some no nonsense attacks mainly incase i come across some crazed huge maniac or a group of them. and of course if someone pulls one on me i would like to know what most untrained people will try with a knife and how to defend it and i then would like to move on to what a semi trained person would do w/ a knife.

again i know i wont have enough time to become very proficient but just adding a few hours here and there will def be fun and should yield some good benefits.

the only new skill ive worked on w/ a knife is if i have a knife and the other guy is unarmed. some basic blocks using an arm and the knife together then a quick series of slashes and stabs to cause as much trama as possible.

i will be getting this instruction from my training partner who teaches marines how to knife fight.

thanks i really enjoyed some of those links
