NEW YORK – Belgium's Kim Clijsters reached the US Open final Saturday after defending champion Serena Williams was defaulted on the final point.

Clijsters won the match 6-4 7-5, which ended in controversy when the American was called for a foot-fault on a second serve to go match point down. An angry Williams argued with the lineswoman who reported her for verbal abuse.

Having already received a warning earlier in the match for smashing a racket, Williams was handed an automatic point penalty for a second violation which gave the Belgian the match.

Clijsters, playing in only her third tournament after taking a two-year break to start a family, became the first mother to reach a grand slam final since Evonne Goolagong achieved the feat at Wimbledon in 1980.

It was pretty funny, I enjoyed it. She was going to lose the match anyway. It actually sucks for Clijsters cause her awesome post-kid-having Open run is being overshadowed by that fucking wildebeast. It was a shitty call at that point in a semi final match. It would be similar to a ref calling travelling in an NBA playoff game with 20 seconds left.

I agree....call it the same at the end as you would at the beginning. As a hockey fan, it drives me nuts when refs put their whistles away in overtime and the less talented team takes advantage by clutching/grabbing/tripping like mad.

really? you think she threw it 'cause she was on the ropes already anyway?? i hope not. it was kinda disappointing to see such a talented and firey competitor totally lose it, though. you don't have to rejoice in defeat, you can even be a bit of a jackass if you want, but that shit was just childish. it wasn't her day. . .keep that fire in your belly and use it the next time. . .don't waste it on some chunky little asian line judge. . .damn shame
