I will give 10,000 K to the most helpful post.

Here is my request:
For the last 10 days I have had a deep, harsh cough as a result of this Upper Resp Infection/whatever I have that's causing my misery. I'm much better now but the cough persists as per is usual for me. My cough is one of those loud very deep and very strong coughs. I always cough like this when I get sick and my cough always persists for very long after I am feeling better otherwise. I guess Im just an amazon heifer monster lol

Anyway, the last few days in the evening, while having coughing fits, i am experiencing pain in my rib cage. In the recent few days my coughing has sometimes been productive and other times just a dry hard cough - this really depends on time of day with 1st thing in the morning being the most productive and later in the evening being mostly dry.

Last night the pain was on the left AND the right side and tonight only on the right side. Pain only when coughing. I can take deep breaths without incident and I can also move around by the waist from side to side or twist without incident. The pain is right about the middle , not too high on my abdomen and not too low.

I have googled and stuff like that and have become frustrated not finding any info on what could be causing this strange pain. I know it's a result of the coughing but Im looking for exactly what is causing the pain and why is it mostly at night?

Go.

Most helpful post= "Go see a doctor, people on a chat board will not know the answer." Except maybe sugartits since he's a nurse & all.

I'll take my karma in small billz plz. Thanks

get a chest x-ray; you may have pneumonia or acute bronchitis - you need antibiotics too
I feel so much better otherwise though. Except in the morning when I am coughing up and blowing out mucus of various colors/
During the day I feel like a champeen besides the intermittent hideous sounding cough

generally, it will often resolve on its own - antibiotics will only lessen it by a day or two. The pain should go away I would guess as the coughing diminishes.

MM69 brings up a good point about chest xray. But, those can be expensive.

MM69 and myself might be able to help you if you send us some chest pics.

Mold in your basement.

i dont have a basement in my home, but i was in chicago at my parents' house for the holidays when i got sick. my sister who also lives in parents' house got very sick as well and my bro who came over on christmas eve/christmas day ended up getting very sick about a day behind me and as of today was told he has walking pneumonia.

there was a flood a few months ago in my parents' basement and they have several inches of standing water. they recently had to have the entire basement redone. new carpet, furniture, flooring, etc.

i dont really have significant congestion at this point except like i said, in the morning when i cough it up from what has settled in my chest and throat and nasal passages. (gross, sorry)

Iit is probably coming from irritation of the pleura or a nerve that runs along the lower edge of the ribs, called the intercostal nerves.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercostal_nerves

This nerve can become irritated by physical stimulation (i.e. getting punched in the ribs a few times, not heavy punches) or also by frequent coughing if the coughing is persistent and rather severe. Additionally, I believe the area was further aggravated by lying down.

The bottom line is you are irritating the area and a nerve is getting pinched. To help this you can try and do some stretching. The best one I have used (I have had this problem) is to lay flat down on the floor and then push up with your arms and then rotate to the left and right, trying to stretch the rib cage. This will relieve pressure from the area.

The first portion is from online, the second part is from my experiences and my wife (she is a physical therapist!) I remembered the pain, she remembered the medical terms lol (smart wives are good for that!!)

They should have the house checked for mold and steamed cleaned if needed. Mold kills.

move to colorado--there is like one mold spore in the whole state and we are looking for it.

my diagnosis is:

The pain is intercostal (between the ribs) and may be caused by subluxed rib from your coughing fits. It hurts, but not much you can do but about the pain but to take analgesic to lessen it and get better. Did you see a doctor about your cough? Were you sick? I think I recall seeing a post where you said you were sick. Were antibiotics prescribed? This is what should've been done. Why the pain is mostly at night is probably due to aggravation. You sleep at night and it starts to heal. You wake up in the AM and start coughing...after coughing all day the condition worsens and intercostal nerve is irritated. Also, less productive cough is more likely to strain it more (which you have later in the day).

As for the cough, you were sick, no?? Sinus infection? How long have you been ill? Are you taking anything?? Any OTC? I'm guessing you may also have a bit of post nasal drip going on too. Try a Claritin or similar (antihistimine) to dry you out (Benadryl works great but causes drowsiness).

Any other questions?

ah shit...I started my genuine reply after BRR's post (#7), but due to me not just googling and copying wiki, I was beat to the draw.

My answer is most helpful anyway. :p

CEO - thanks for the info.

I have been sick since 12/25 but much much better now. I have been taking the following OTC
ibuprofen as needed
sudafed for nasal congestion (not needed except in the morning when i wake up)
mucinex for congestion (only needed at night before i go to bed when layinbg down seems to aggravate the slight wheezing; helps me cough up the stuff in the morning too by thinning out the secretions ew gross)
dextromethrophan for cough suppresant (take this all day and night)
at night i take antihistamine (benadryl) because i seem to get a little bit of runny nose plus it helps me sleep

bleach kills mold. A little bleach water solution would be a lot less $$...that is, if you can find the mold!

You may not want to take so much of the cough suppressant. It's really not recommended for people coughing up a lot of sputum. I would say only if you NEED it (like at work and you have a meeting and can't be coughing, etc.).

Be SURE you are drinking PLENTY of water! This will keep you hydrated, help to loosen mucus, and generally help to flush you out overall. Being sufficiently hydrated will help you feel good too.

I personally don't like to take both a decongestant and antihistimine, and sometimes find that ibuprofen can help with my congested feeling (by reducing inflammation in sinuses). In the earlier stages when I'm absolutely miserable though, I will take both when I feel I absolutely need to. I prefer antihistimines and find that one loratadine (Claritin) a day works quite well for me. I'd rather not have any post-nasal drip! I hate that shit!

But, the only strong recommendations I would make would be to take less cough suppressant and drink PLENTY of water. And, if this continues past monday, go see a doctor.

HTH! ;)

Go.
Very hard to narrow this down without seeing exactly where you are talking about (yeah I am a visual type of person)..my guesses are 2 choices. One could be that you have a nice lovely dandy infection in the lower parts of your lung, however you have claimed that you feel fine and a little better or what not. Which is not common with an infection. Typically you should feel like a huge pile of poop..However on the other hand you have been sick for some time now, normal viral bullshit is usually gone by now. You should be taking some form of an antibiotic! And if you dont get well off of that then by all means get a damn xray!
Now my other option is that you are a deep cougher (as I am myself, thanks to being smart and smoking). You have dry deep coughing which is pulling on your inner muscles of your abdomen. Really not much you can do to soothe it, but be thankful it is not some huge infection. I am leaning more towards the muscle side because it usually happens to me when I get sick. I often get Bronchitis and the deep dry non helpful coughing leads my stomach to feel as if someone were kicking me in it.
Here is a question for you, does the pain go away Or is it a constant pain?

Thanks Angel for the thoughtful response. I appreciate it.
With regards to the pain, it only lasts while I am coughingm and so far only at night after I have been coughing intermittently throughout the day. Also, i sit here on my living room floor usually with my knees up at my chest, then i have coughing fits. i think its a combination between coughing all day causing soreness in the side of my ribs, my positioning at night when i sit on the floor, and full blown aids.
