Jogging and Bodybuilding?

Jabber Jaw

New member
I love jogging. I usually run 4 to 5 miles, 4 to 5 days a week. (use to) About 2 months ago I got pretty heavy into bodybuilding and want to get built ( some nice size ). I was told by a bodybuilder that if I wanted to bulk up to stop running because I will loose all the muscle that I worked so hard for, so I did. I miss running and would like to know, can I run? How many times a week? and will I loose all the hard earned muscle I worked so hard for? What do all you big guys suggest for some good cardio? My wife has a stepper, but I hat it. Was thinking about getting in some mountain biking. Just don't know. Thanks to all who reply. I'm also drinking a ton of water, 5 or 6 protien shakes a day, started taking creatine 10 g. per day and L Glutamine 10 g. per day to help bulk up. Thanks

yes, i suggest that if you must do cardio, do something not so catabolic, like tire-flipping. thats always fun...

Get a heart rate monitor, that is the most important factor in determining wether or not your burning fat or in a catabolic state. There are many target heart rate charts online and you can figure out what range you should stay in based on your age.

I have been running every other day or every two days and sometime 4-5 days per week. I have been running 2-5miles each time and havent seemed to lose much muscle. I have been doing it some first thing in the AM and sometimes I do it in the PM, just depends. I have lost some weight but I have been eating above my maintain level. The only thing I have noticed is a loss of strength but it is minimal.

If you like running -- run. But don't ask for permission for it to be alright. It works directly against your bodybuilding goals.

For about a year before I started lifting I ran on the cross country and the track teams, and it really helped define my muscles, and depending on what kind of running you do it migh thelp you increase in size, because, I know some runners who have huge legs.

That's ridiculous. They had huge legs to start out with. Nobody gets big legs from jogging. Sprinting, yes -- but not jogging.

you don't just jog during xc you run pretty hard, we do hills, mile repeats, 1000meter hills, 400meter repeats, the occasional long run, and on recovery days we jog, but that's just on recovery days, and I really don't care about sprinters, I'm more of a distance runner.
