What is the desire for a guy in his mid 20's and older to date a girl 17 or younger?

It can't be just sex, because there are a lot of young women in their early 20's who would be there for that. I think that it has more to do with control and shock value. A 17 year old is going to be willing to do anything to please her older bf and look cool to her friend. At the same time the guy gets to brag to his buddies that he is doing the neighbor's HS daughter.

I think you confuse can and should, along with minimalistic standards.

A 12 year old could do a lot of things that we as a society would rather not impose on them. We have had preteens working in sweatshops here for 60+ hours a week. Are we hampering their "personal growth" by outlawing it now?

That anyone would doubt it is better for a childs, with an average lifespan of 70+, to wait a few more years to complete its development is beyond me. Standards were different once by necessaity, not by choice. When the need disappeared, so did the accompanying standards. Again, that it can be done, doesn't mean it should be done. There is no justifiable reason or soceital interest in encouraging minors to have sex at all, most especially with adults.

And while physically they have the otward appearance of an adult in some ways, we also know scientifically that their minds are not yet fully developed, and that puberty does play a big role in confusing their emotional and reasoning competence. It's simple biological fact. Kids all act a certain way because their bodies are programmed to do so byt he changes occuring in them

The 18 isn't as arbitrary as some her have suggested. It also coincides with the end part of their growth cycle.
