Is my friend being McDojo'd?

I have a friend whose dad took Kendo when he was younger. Kendo is a great art, but it costs 160 a month. His dad is very passionate about it, and makes him takes it as well. However, about a month after he takes it, the instructor tells him that he is a natural learner and that he should invest in this Kendo suit thing which cost about a grand. The instructor tells him typically it takes a student six months before they can get this armor , but apparently hes a natural at all this. So I was kind of skeptical about this. Is he being scammed? And if so, is there anyway I can convince to take another art?

Who sells the armour? The instructor? suspect.

He may be genuine, but if the normal time is 6 months, then wait 6 months. and tell your friend to find an art HE wants, not what dad wants. I know its hard letting a parent down, but if Kendo is his want, great, but if it isnt, then its like being in a job for convenience. It will suck till the day you quit, then you will wonder why the hell you stayed so damn long.

Too many parents want to extend their lives through their children.

Get your friend to seriously think about where this art will take him and if it is truly what he wants. He will never find his talent by doing what is forced.

And once he gets the armour, hes in for the long haul unless he can sell it.

is your friend any good?
that's the obvious question I'd ask

dont forget not everyone has the same goals in martial arts so it depends on what he is trying to get out of it.

1g is a big investment and he better make sure he is ready to commit to the art or has the money to burn

I think I have spent about $1K in gear over the years already, but to drop a whole $1,000 all at once. I would think about it twice...

i would only have to think about it once :)

its not really the same but we have kids workout for a month before we even start asking the kids family to get him a gi. my sensei orders them but doesnt profit. he doesnt force them to buy it either if they cant afford it and gi's are far cheaper.

if i dropped 1k on MA it would be to travel to brazil, japan or hawaii to train for as long as i could last.
