Is it wrong to deadlift and squat in the same week?

My split looks like this:

Sunday - OFF
Monday - Chest/Tri's
Tuesday - Back/Abs/Cardio
Wed - OFF
Thursday - Bi's/Abs/Cardio
Friday - Shoulders/Traps
Saturday - Legs

My question is I squat on saturday and deadlift on Tuesday. Is that overworking my back? IF SO, I was going to squat one weak and deadlift the next, AND change my split like this:

Sunday - OFF
Monday - Chest/Tri's
Tuesday - Back/Abs/Cardio
Wed - OFF
Thursday - Legs
Friday - Shoulders/Traps
Saturday - Bi's/Abs/Cardio

The madcow 5x5 thread will have you squating and deadlifting in the same day, albeit with that being a light squat day. Some programs will have you deadlifting, benching and squating all in the same day. I get the impression that with Westside you can go ages without ever deadlifting due to squats working similar muscle sets and they'll spend a lot more time working deadlift assists than doing deadlifts.

It's more a matter of working a program, though, than wondering about a particular split. With a program you might find that your day-to-day exercise routine changes through the course of it besides a steady progression or drop-off in weights.

People running BB-style splits tend to try and put as big a space as possible between squats and deadlifts.

Wednesday's 5 x 5 kicks my ass, plus I'm in the gym almost 2hrs. A lot different than the one body part BB program when I was in and out in 40 minutes!

In week 4 the light squat day is still around 80-90% of my max, followed by max deadlift. So that's tough although it's bearable since I enjoy DL.

Interestingly, I dread the standing military after that (which I suck at) and welcome the pullups.

Yes indeed.

I'm interested to see how my deadlift feels next week, not having to squat right beforehand.

I hit deads and squats in the same day. Its brutal - my legs arent exactly my strong part so maybe someone else knows better.

i do both on the same day, SQ after DL's. everything is warm and stretched, i just can't max on both.

if you are going to do them both in the same week, go light on one of them, and heavy on the other. wouldln't reccommend doing the both heavy in the same week, you will wear yourself out quickly.
your best bet would be to go heavy and do squat one week, then deads the next, alternating them on your leg day.
when you said you would do one one week, and the other the next, you changed your work out, but moved your leg day closer to your back day. (i'm assuming that you were going to do deads on your back day, and squats on your leg day.)

Everyone is different. Are you finding that your squats suffer if you go heavy on dl's - or vice versa? If not, then I wouldn't worry too much about it. I used to do dl's on Monday's and then squats on Thursday's. I never seemed to lack in my squats.

you can go to hell for that

LOL!!!

I think thath th Tue/ Sat split is better if its Wed/ Sat.

Also, if you don't feel like its to much stress on your lower back then do it.
If it is, like you said, do high reps for one and low reps for the other, and the next week alternate the high/low.

So much hinges on the amount of volume you are doing (and frequency which I guess is 1x weekly for you) and the intensity (i.e. % of 1RM - how heavy) you are using. In one scenario, it could be fine and not even enough. In another, it could fry you.
