Is dairy that bad?

Hi:
I am a pretty-serious lifter. However, I do love dairy. I don't just count lifting my remote to change the channel on the "boob-tube", to be the only-exercise that I do. However, I know several people, men and women "bodybuilders", who just totally-avoid dary. What's up w/ that? Elaborate, for us, pleaase!

Many people are lactose intolerant - they can't digest the milk sugar (Lactose) found in most dairy products.

Therefore, they must avoid all dairy products to avoid any stomach upset.

Or they can get lactose free products (like milk) and should be fine....

Thats what I use....... Works for me.... :)

lactose intolerant people must avoid all dairy products (unless they are lactose free)

for all the others (including BBers) low fat dairy products are good
(dairy being not good is just a MYTH !)

dairy is great

Just simply look on a carton of milk, and you'll see how nutritius it is. If you're limiting carbs in your diet, just go easy on the dairy.

I'm going through the same thing...I used to drink a half gallon of skim milk a day but when I started getting serious, cut back.

Now cottage cheese, on the other hand (low fat)...I hear it is one of the best proteins because aminos in it help with muscle metabolism...anyone care to elaborate a little more on this? I may be wrong all together. I'm eating the stuff about once a day right now, even though it tastes like ass...

Here's a couple of interesting theories on this I read recently:

1)Old-time bodybuilders used to rely heavily on whole milk--you know, the kind with tons of fat--while bulking. Since they didn't really understand cutting calories, when they cut milk out of their diet and really started noticing weight-loss they assumed it was some weird property of milk and not just that they were taking in fewer calories. So we get the idea that dairy is bad if you're cutting up and that it thickens the skin, etc.

2)Lactose--the sugar in milk--is comprised of glucose and galactose. Galactose, like fructose, is primarily used to refill liver glycogen and is not readily stored as muscle glycogen. If more is taken in than can be used by the liver, it tends to be stored as fat. So, if you're consuming very large quantities of milk this might be a problem, but it's unlikely.

Conclusion: milk is generally fine while dieting.
