Katrina or not, hurricanes don't look like that. Those are just severe thunderstorms. Imagine in a hurricane, just the eye is about 20-50 miles in diameter. The hurricane is so wide, the only thing you see when is coming is a grey sky with low fast dark clouds.

Hurricanes are one huge storm, but yes there are bands of the storm that break off.. so it could well be remnants of a hurricane.
