They don't even teach us that other countries exist until highschool. It's funny, too, as we have an incredibly short and, in my opinion, boring history.

i agree samoth. like the US is a just a baby still compared to most countries

We're so ignortant to other cultures and countries that it almost scares me.

Edit - Generally speaking, of course.

is it true the US only learns about the US?
We covered the US in world history, basically it goes cavemen, Indians, white men, black men, McDonalds with a various wars and human slaughter in between.

It makes people feel better about themselves to cut others down when they know nothing about them.

I stay away from politics as well, mainly 'cause I know nothing about it. I have trouble seeing why so-and-so hates this-and-that, and why such-and-such a country needs to control this, that, and everything else. I'm not saying that there isn't a good reason for this or anything, more that I enjoy living in my little bubble world where everyone of every color in every nation -- ya know, the human race, I think they call us -- care about more important stuff than who has more bombs and who should control all the oil.

I think it depends on what part of the country you come from. In Kindergarten, (1983) I was exposed to various cultures and learned about different countries. All through elementary school (Public School), each school trip focused on the history & culture of a different race or ethnic groups. What I didn't learn in school (grammar thru High School), I learned in watching Sunday News Shows and PBS (Pre-History Channel & Cable) with my Dad

Am I where I should be about world history, I admit No. However, I am amazed at how ignorant so many Americans are to other cultures & countries.

Im sixth grade I had to be able to identify every European country by shape outside of map context and name its capitol. In High School American History the teacher gave us an extra credit question, "Circle the United States on this world map." Yes, people missed it!

I don't believe you.

Circle Wyoming. . . Okay. Circle something that's usually in the center of a world map (at least the maps I've always seen)... I don't believe you.
