IMPORTANT: SCAM for PAYPAL info

Interesting Dick Cheney shoots a lawyer and everyone cheers. When a lawyer get you money then people cheer then too...

Dude , I have worked in ebusiness. I know for a fact that comapnies such as Kodak have business with third parties who do electronic debiting for Kodak customers. These things happen all the time. When you work with folks who have wrong email addresses and mistyped account numbers and routing numbers and so on , these type things happen. This is the reason why have perl or python or other programming languages are used to "script" transactions to the bank so that human errors do not occur. It doesn't matter if it's Paypal or joe blow IT company in Denver. Some banks are more modern then others. Bank of America for instance has an IT staff, databases and applications which validate these type of transactions before they happen.

Paypal isn't the problem

I disagree.

Having 1st hand exprience with paypal stealing $1000 from me, I would call them a scam. Read paypal sucks and you'll know people do get their money frozen by paypal for 6 months for no reason.

One thing that's being confused here is phishing and paypal itself conducting business. No one is blaming paypal on phishing, it's the other business practices that people get angry about.

I'm not going to fight about paypal, I could care less either way. Let people read and make educated decisions from 1st hand expriences:

Banks are regularly audited via Sarbanes Oxley
Third party debiting companies are regularly audited through PCI compliance

http://www.sarbanes-oxley.com/

The third party debiting companies need to be PCI certified http://www.scanalert.com/Content.sa?sec=2&sub=3
That means that people with computers scan their network for vulnerabilities and folks come into their shop asking them questions like, "When a customer of yours (being a company that provides service) creates an invoice, how is a remittance generated and sent back to your customer??

I guess you may be able to get cheap PCI compliance, but I've never been through a "cheap" PCI. At least someone who is trying to do legitimate business does what it takes to be legitimate

I assume the paypal url above is actually the text message portion of a url object in an HTML email, and if you hover your mouse over it the actual link addy is diiferent (as it appears in the status bar and/or the popup bubble)? like when you use the "URL" tool in a EF post. Is that right?

If I am not mistaken ebay owns paypal. You can't find a number for ebay support either. Their online support is a joke and just tells you to send an email to dispute resolution if you have a problem with a transaction, which you never hear from for weeks. It is a nightmare.

With paypal if there is a dispute they freeze the funds for that trasaction until resolved, which sucks if you are the seller and has happened a few times to me. I will say on the rare occasions that I have had a fraudulant charge paypal credited the money back to me since I could prove item was delivered. Paypal will deduct fees from whatever account you have secured the acct with if you do not have enough funds in your paypal acct to cover them. They are a business and charge fees to handle money transactions like WU-that is what they do.

Yes, paypal's policies are the problem. I was selling on ebay and someone (competitor possibly?) flagged me for selling merchandise that broke ebay's policies. (these include: nearly every fucking thing people are selling on ebay) So, yes my account was frozen. I could deal with that. But then ebay over charges my fees account and paypal locks my account and keeps money that has not been transferred to me yet. That, is a problem! The funny thing is, I was the only on making money selling in my category at the time - certain adult themed movies (bondage etc. ebay's explanation, "we do not allow movies to be sold with words like bondage in description" Uh, they have a whole section dedicated to bondage flicks....) Now I go on ebay and type in keywords that relate to the material I was selling and it's all over the place. It's not like ebay can't see that it's beeing sold. It's just that no one is really moving as much of it as I was. Now, with yahoo auctions I sold some vanilla porno flicks and when they decided to cut out all the adult stuff, they yanked everyone's auctions (not just mine!) and that was that. No threats, no money taken, etc etc. I have to respect Yahoo for that.

I had received several such emails in the past, some of them I reported to paypal and ebay. I was informed in response that they were scams.

They gave the impression as if they came from a legit source (paypal, ebay, banks) with a sender named [email protected] etc. It will provide a link, and if you click on the link, it would say that 'you must provide the following identification information, or your account would be closed.'

Off course then you would be asked everything from your SS#, to your driving license #, to your mother's maiden name.

LESSON: DON'T RESPOND TO ANY EMAIL ADDRESSING YOU AS 'DEAR PAYPAL MEMBER OR DEAR EBAY MEMBER.'
ANY LEGIT EMAIL FROM SUCH SOURCE WOULD IDENTIFY YOU WITH YOUR FULL NAME.
Only directly access your account by using your id and password to confirm or change any information. DO NOT CLICK THE LINK ON THE EMAIL.
