College is going to lead me to an early death. I'm not a very intelligent person but it would be nice to have a decent career so I decided to go into engineering. I used to think the sauce was causing my hair to fall out but it's school.

Any stupid people on here ( which most of you probably are) have any success stories of how they overcame unbearable odds that lead them to a successful career with a hot wife ? I need a morale boost.

no "enjoying" to it.

It's not your normal university. It's research first, teach later. That's what the professors are told when they are hired. I go to a smart school, and i'm a dummy.

in all honesty, i spend between 60-65 hours a week (classes/studying) for the fall and spring.

Right now i'm taking 5 hours and spend an average 25-30 hours week which counts for studying/classes.

i just need to vent, i don't really like to bitch. I should be thankful for the opportunity.

I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering at University of Arizona and still find time to have a life/workout/mess around with girls.

Well, I'm an engineer too(Not stupid but I can tell you a few things to help you out). Firstly, You have to learn to compartmentalize your brain.

Anyways, the list:

1. ACADEMICS is always #1. Not sports, not women, not working out, not nothing. Become a hermit if you need to.

2. You obviously have core classes you need to do....most likely 3/term Concentrate on those as much as you possibly can. Get tutors(They are free in the US I believe inside the University for those classes) if you're having problems in your core classes. Always aim for a B or over in those classes. They are normally 4 credits each and have a major impact on your GPA.

3. For your electives. PICK EASY ONES. So that they will boost your overral GPA. A lot of people pick really hard ones and get overloaded with work, and end up with sub 2.5 GPA's for their troubles.

4. If you're having problems in your core classes attend the focus groups. Yes, I know they are gay, but they do help some people out in some of the course material.

5. Don't skip classes.

6. Try to get at least 7 hours sleep......seriously not a joke. I'm at least 3X more productive when i'm alert then when I'm dead tired from lack of sleep.

7. Eat clean....makes a huge difference for your state of mind. No fast food.

8. Work-out if you can...it doesn't have to be for 1+ hours. 30 minutes is enough with sufficient intensity. If you don't have time on weekdays, work out on weekends only. Working-out is 70% nutrition and 30% consistency. Remember that.

9. Don't FRIGGING DRINK. Yes, i know this is hard, but my capacity for multi-tasking and doing math and physics goes to shit for at least 2 days after I have a few drinks. Alcohol will make you dumber...yes it sounds corny but true.

10. If you want good grades, your social life will suffer......that's just a fact of life. Unless you're a genius you're going to have to hit the books hard, so no going to the bars on a daily basis. The good part, is that in the long run, you'll know who your real friends are.

Btw, I made the honor roll 3.25 GPA + doing Nuclear Physics, so I know what you're going through.

Engineering is one of the toughest and most demanding careers you can try. Over 40% don't get past the first year. So, if you did congratulations.

That should be in the cliff notes section @ the book store "How to Become an Engineer."

Living by those rules would really help my situation out.

Bro you need to suck it up and finish. I wish I had. I have a great job and a hot ass wife but I had to start at the bottom of a major airline and bust my ass to get where I am (air traffic control). There isn't a day that goes by that I don't wish I had partied a little less and went to class a little more. 5 and 1/2 yrs was alot of time wasted with no degree. There will be plenty of time after you graduate to chase tail. Get your priorities straight.....

There are few people who have become extremely successful without a college degree and then there are those who "just get by". Don't feel compelled to stick with engineering...there are plenty of great fields out there that you would probably enjoy. Money should never, ever be a motive. I'll tell you what, rich people have just as many bills as middle income people and have the same problems. Money isn't everything, and if you marry a hag because she wants your money, understand she'll get your money and then dump you and run (not like thats happend to me ).
Bottom line is you shouldn't quit. I remember being in school and watching the bio majors sweating it out every night, reading over notes, memorizing thousands of definitions, and they looked miserable. I would ask, "why do you put yourself through this misery?" they said they loved what they do. So, do what you love, not what you think will make you money, and all the work you put into it will be that much easier.

My friend dropped out of college, he is 21, and is a career waiter. Others can start their own businesses. My degree is a 5 year Architecture program, 160 hours, so it's been long for me too. I have a girlfriend though, and she is going to pharmacy school next year, so she will definitely be making more than I will. Just do what you can, my roommate is studying to be an engineer, and all his friends have trouble. Usually they are at I.H.O.P. studying all night every night. Study as much as you can, take naps to avoid over studying, take breaks.

all i will say about college is fuck as much as you can, dont worry so much about the school stuff. sounds like terrible advice but looking back my "education" was a waste. i was working for myself in college (completely unrelated to my major) and am still doing it now on a larger scale. theres no chance anyone that graduated in my class has pulled down more loot than me and theyre all 3.6+ gpa working world people

best part of it is my college has me on their mailing list as a trash hauler.. if those fuckers think theyre getting another dime out of me for an overpriced and semi useless education theyre crazy

i met great friends in college though. focus on the social part, and do what you need to get through the academic. if you have common sense things will fall into place once you get out of the tunnel

That's great advice. I realised early in life that most people I use to call friends were really just drinking buddies, only around when you are doing well or partying.

As far as engineering, I did 1 year of it followed by 1.5 year of business. I made it past the first year of engineering and it was hell. Didn't even have time to shave. What is expected of you is unreal. Luckily I came from a good high school so it wasn't as bad. I decided it wasn't for me and went into business.

I never finished my degree and to tell you the truth I'm doing fine now. I use to worry about it, but not anymore. To me it makes no difference, there's no way I could keep a 9 to 5 job working under someone else. For some it is essential to there success, for others, it's just a security blanket.

Hey whats up bro,

I start in the fall so i can not tell you how its going to go except for my experience with an internship last summer in audit. Its not that bad, i guess there is a point when you know that this is not going to be your life.

My plan is to pass the CPA Exam and put in my 2 years of audit experience to become certified. Then its off to get my MBA in finance.

I would have orginally been a finance major, but a few years ago the market was so bad that all finance majors were getting shitted on. So I have decided to take the back way in by starting in accounting. I have been asked to join the financal service sector of my firm so that is a great start for me. Oh yea as far as pay, all big 4 start with high 40's low 50 range coming out of college with a BA. Grads from what I hear only make a few thousand more. Hope this helps..

90% of my friends are like this. The last few years I've just assumed that what you stated above is the definition of a friend. So many things change once you're out of high school.

My whole life style needs a major over haul.

That would be a larger task than completing school.
