e have NOT had to use our GFA furnace in over two years, other than to use the fan via electric to circulate the heat upstairs. Cost us $400 last year to keep the downstairs at 78-79 degrees.
I hear they are making furnances now too.

One of those corn furnaces burns about 2 bushels a day, and some of them burn other things, as well.
Maintenance issue, granted. But at least you're buying American, that's a plus.

In my area $1,000 a month gets you a studio apartment, that has parking for one vehicle only, no pets permitted, and you pay ALL utilities except heat and water. It's actually more economical to have a house. My monthly mortgage and utilites come to less than $1,400 (EXCEPT for the oil bill, but that wasn't a big deal until the past couple of years), I can write off some of my house since I work from home, and I get (a little) break on my taxes.heavy_duty said:

I just bought a house, take posession on the 19th...it's gas heated forced air. Not sure what the damage will be per month for heat, but I do know that natural gas is cheaper than oil.

I glanced through an article not too long ago that reviewed natural gas, propane, oil and electric forms of heating and electric and natural gas were the best cost wise.
I remember when people cringed at the words electric heat.
By me if you order less that x amount of propane a year they charge you 4 times the regular rate.
