I want to start planning a trip to Africa, has anyone ever been?

I figure I'll use my medical profession to get me over there for free. Once I'm there I'll be providing medical care to villages and locals. My girlfriend is from Kenya and also a nurse, so she'll be going with me to help and to visit friends and family. We'll have a few days to do whatever we want, i was thinking of getting one of those secluded safari huts with nothing but netting for doors and the whole structure is on stilts so you don't get mauled in your sleep.

Has anyone ever been? Any sites or advice you would recommend?

I want to spend half or 3/4's of my time there doing volunteer work but do want at least a few days to do some other shit. A lot of these organizations require you to raise anywhere from 3 to 5k dollars for the the trip and they're all focused on an itinerary.

Why would they require you to foot ANY of the cost. My sister will be leaving for China in less than 3 weeks and has return airfare and stipends already in place. I don't mean to cast a pale on your endeavour, but I would think even a Peace Corps stint wouldn't require that kind of personal investment.

BTW, my sister has also spent some time in Africa as a safari tour guide/driver. I can ask her about some of the obstacles, etc., see what she sez if she has enough time to respond.
