I need some advice on weight gaining!

Okay, I just turned 17 in August and I am 6'0" and weigh about 140 lbs. I hate being this skinny, but I have a really high metabolism. I was wondering some good ways to gain weight, I want to be about 150-160 in muscle.

I was wondering about buying a Bowflex, I have about 2 grand saved up for one... I have wanted one for a long time. What is the difference between a Power Pro and an Ultimate? Also, are Bowflexes worth it?

I also want to start doing a diet to help me gain muscle mass (or at least help me get healthier than I already am). I will probably need to post in the bodybuilding food forums, so if no one can help me in this thread I will just do so in there.

Thanks! :D

You could save alot of that money by joining a gym and obtaining a personal trainer to achieve your goals and give you a solid base to work on.Just one of many ways.We have a kid in our gym that was your size and he spent 2 months with a personal trainer and ended up gaing close to 15 lbs.He didn't spend more than 500.00 but now he has the knowledge to work out and diet on his own.

really, screw the bowflex. i hate it. i wanted one for a long time too, until i got it. the problem is that there is no resistance when the bow isnt flexed. the resistance gets higher as your push or pull on the handles. thus, for say a bench press, you have no resistance at the lowest point. that is lost time, muscle growth, and money to me. for serious working out- BIG WASTE OF MONEY!!!. they people on the commercials dont use bowflex. they are models that go to a gym. use that money to go to a gym, or if you could find one, a machine like the bowflex that uses real weights. i have seen them around, but dont know of any name brand ones. they are cheap though.

forget the bowflex. go to a gym and get a trainer if you want. eat lots of protein like eggs, fish, chicken, steak, beans, eggs, fish, and protein shakes. and more fish

with that much money u could buy all the weights u need. fuck a bowflex they suck. get power rack, bench, plenty of weights, some dumbells and your set and u'd prolly have money left.

My friend just got a Bowflex, so I am going over to his house this weekend and try it out.

More Weight and Less Reps = Muscle Growth correct?
And Less Weight with More Reps is Muscle Definition?

first off, welcome to the board here. as you will soon find out, there is a lot of knowledge here.
like everyone else said. ditch the bow flex idea. take that money, and get a membership at a gym. your money will better invested getting a membership to a gym. you will meet people there that know what they are doing, and they can show you correct form. do you have anybody in your area that you know, that lifts? if so, start tagging along with them and work out with them. they would be able to teach you a lot about training just by going to the gym with them. if not, find a trainer at the gym that you are going to. before you invest the money in a trainer, ask around. there are a lot of people that are so called trainers, but dont know squat. the people that work at the gym should be able to help you. also, ask questions here, you will get answers. ask about anything, form, dieting, workout routines, anything.
for you, at 6 feet tall and weighting 170, i would say that you need to start eating more. eat as much steak and chicken as you can. get yourself some protein shakes. and start hitting the gym...

yeah man f*** the bow flex..i would say buy a power rack but i think your better off joining a gym..i would be very careful of a trainer..some gyms give you like a free session with one for joining..thats fine and ask as many questions as you can about how to use the equipment..quite honestly theres so much stuff on the net you dont need a trainer..read some of the stickies in the training section..i would start of with simple compound moves..then after a couple of months i would go on 5x5..
heres something to start with
mon
squats 3x6-10
leg press 2 x8
seated leg curl 2x10
calves 2x10

wed
bench press 2x8
incline BB 2x8
dips 2x10
side laterals

fri
Deadlifts 2x5
Chins (add weight if u need to) 3x10
Lat pull 2x8
BB curls 3x8
youll need to eat a lot of protein at least 250g and kepp your cals high

Eat a bunch of calories. You wanna gain weight? Try 5000 - 6000 cal a day. High protein and CHO and about 150 gms of fat. Work out hard. Keep good form. Buy some hard iron. I had the top of the line bowflex. Didn't like it. It gave good resistance but felt a little wimpy. I thought it was nothing like free weights. If you got the money, buy 495 pounds of free weights, a good bar, a multy angle bench, some bar stands and you are set. If you have extra $, buy a dip.

Alright, I checked out Elite Fitness and it looks pretty good. I don't want to become huge and ripped, I just want to have definition and be about 160-170... Could I get this with a Bowflex? My friend likes his compared to free weights, is it just opinion or what?

what is your HT? Are you male? Going for the mens health look? Calories in verses calories out. If you don't have the mass, you can't sculpt a muscular body

I am wanting to gain mass, as well as definition. The thing is I can get a Bowflex Ultimate at a really, really good price...

save your $. Buy some good iron. Buy a lot of good quality food. Eat, train and sleep. Stay off the alcohol. Gain mass in the winter and cut during beach season.

thats a good bit of weight to gain. you sound skinny, like me. you dont have to worry about definition, because all you need is size. i wont say that you COULDNT get 20 or 30 lbs with a bowflex, but its gonna be really hard. im 135lbs. i got a bowflex. i trained my ass off. the bowflex doesnt train the full range of motion, so the muscle CAN'T get a full workout. i saw results, but they sucked for my time and money. i do the same amount of time and work with free weights- i see results that the bowflex missed. the squat pullies on that thing are a joke. you lose resistance at the bottom- which is where your muscles need it to grow! same thing for the bench. you lose resistance at the bottom where the stretch is.

like i said before, the bowflex will give you a workout. i just dont want to see you waste your money like i did. get some free weights and use those. i ended up buying a squat/ bench rack, full weights, and dumbells after i got my bowflex. i just needed the freeweights to progress, and i wasted my money and time on the bowflex.

remember the people on TV didnt use the bowflex to get the results. they used freeweights

JRHolmes. You van get a FULL range of motion on the bowflex. I did. What is your definition of full range of motion? Is it biomechanically correct? On BB bench press, do you touch your chest for the best biomechinacly (sp) proper form?

Alright, if you guys could supply me with a simple yes or no answer on this question it'll make things easier for me lol...

Can I gain mass/weight with a Bowflex? :rainbow:

You can gain musclea, as if with any exercies if done properly. All depends on calories and training regime. Dude, train hard on the bowfles, eat a lot and save the boxes (if you need to send it back, you need the original stuff). Anything else?

My advice is: Do whatever it takes to get access to weights and get into a gym if possible. You could go the other route and buy equipment for your home. Any weights would be better then a bowflex though. Youll likely outgrow the resistance eventually and its never the same as moving actual weight. Not only should your results be quicker with weights, but you wont be limited either.

yes of course. it will be limited as compared to freeweights :)

oh yeah, walking beast brought up a good point. quickness of gains. bowflex = slower

if you havent noticed this thread is getting a lot of attention as compared to the others. its for a reason. nobody wants to see you waste your time and money, and we are all just trying to help.

the bottom line is get some equipment you will use. Why waste money on stuff you will not use. If you will use the bowflex, you will get results. If you use DB or BB you will get results. God Damn simple question..NEXT

Yeah, it's just I can get a Bowflex Ultimate with 410 lb upgrade and leg press upgrades for about 800 dollars, whereas they are normally 2000+... So if Bowflex worked I wanted to take advantage of this.

Do it then. If you don't like it sell the thing. Just get active and lifting. Drink a gallon of milk a day for calories if you wanna gain mass.

Another thing about free weights, I have no clue about any of it. This is the first time I have ever wanted to work out. I don't know what I would need, what is a waste of money, etc.

less than 50 cent a pound for good iron. A good lifting bar properly knurled and swivel collars. Get some elephant racks, for partials and a good free standing rack. Buy some Power Blocks for about 6oo. This will give you DB's from 2.5 to 85 pounds. Do some research. buy used and a good sturdy bench.

damn dude, you ask a lot of questions. No spotter needed on DB's. Get a spotter for heavy wt's. If no spotter, keep collars off so you can dump the weight.

Haha sorry for the questions, I think I may go with Bowflex, I will still have quite a bit of money left over, so even if I have to sell the Bowflex, I can still get free weights.

Thanks for all the help :)

With free weights won't I also need someone to spot me?

Not if you get a power rack. You can set the pins at different heights so they will catch the weight if it falls. Im sure youll get more out of that then a bowflex, but its your money! Best of luck!

Why would anybody sell a 2000 dollar piece of equipment for 800. To me that seems funny. I think it's probably because the people realized it sucks ass but eh whatever. Just about every single person on this thread, with the exception of one, has basically said fuck the bowflex =\

Also, don't forget the reason you metabolism is so fast is because you are still growing. Once you hit 19 or 20 your metabolism will slow dramatically. It did for me and I find it much easier to put on muscle now - and fat also :) .

Isn't the resistance on the bowflex kind of like bands? Some powerlifters incorporate bands to their routines. I think it'll be a good idea to use both bowflex and free weights!

If you want a bowflex...nobody can talk you out of it.

My first gym:
$99 for a Weider power rack that came with a bench. Had a cable pully on each end of the rack.
Bought some dbells that I could add plates to
Bought an ez curl bar and some bigger plates cheap
Found an old bar to squat, deadlift, row, and everything else with

I turned Pro in that gym...and my squat rack was a pair of old rusty beat up 55 gallon steel drums.

I force fed and worked my tail off to go from 152 to over 300 pounds.

If you want it bad enough...you can do it.
