I may have fucked up my shoulder at the gym today

I was doing behind the neck shoulder presses sitting down, at a different gym. The shoulder press rack was kind of funny, the bar was located WAY behind my normal starting position. I had to stretch back and press upwards, then sit back down in the seat straight. I was using 185lbs and after the 9th rep, I went to rerack the weight, but when I stretched my arms backwards, the bar dropped to the left side on the peg. I heard a POP in my shoulder and felt something twist.

I waited 1/2 hour and still had no pain then so I continued my workout. This workout was at noon today. Since then, I have slowly lost mobility in my left shoulder. Now it aches. I could not straighten my arm while shooting pool without it hurting - which is why I am home on a Friday night early. Now I can not bring my left arm straight up to the side beyond my chest level. I have about 60% mobility now. Even now, I am having a funny numb feeling in the fingers on my left hand which is making typing so hard as I keep making mistakes.

WTF should I do?

see a doctor. you probably messed up your rotator or something( ), but I wouldn't know. on the shoulder press, my gym has that and that sucks, but it also has like safety bars and the side and that is where I lift up the weight instead of trying to reach way back, prone to injury, and unracking/reracking the weight.

You need to get checked out by a doctor. Behind the neck military presses are famous for rotator cuff injuries. Leave it alone. Period. Do not work it... and get it checked out.

ICE like crazy. Tomorrow morning you probably won't be able to lift it at all. Go to the doctor and see how serious it is. My shoulder injury felt similar and I did not have to have surgery.

After enough rest time I got some good re-hab exercises from www.abcbodybuilding.com

Good luck, and quit doing behind the head presses when you return!
Anybody going behind the head is just asking for rotator cuff problems in my opinion. We just have to make sure we learn from our mistakes.

Guys, thanks for the replies. Today it is really sore and the range of mobility is restricted still. I am going to try icing it.

did the same thing 2 months back...have just lifted through it...I can no long shoulder press or bench...after my cycle im going to take it easy and see a doctor.

Honestly...you need to keep ice on it...and then heat. Take 600mg ibuprofen 3x a day for 14 days. You can also take orudis kt if you wish...3 tabx 3x a day for 3 days...then 2 tabs a day twice a day for two days...then one as needed. Keep stretching it and remember to work those rotator cuffs.

If you are having problems...feel free to email me anytime.
