i have three friends

well, really i have a lot more, but for the purpose of this thread i'm only discussing three of them.

friend #1: I've known for a number of years. never asks for anything from me, although i would gladly do what i could. when i've needed anything, he's there in a heartbeat to help.

friend #2: I've known for about a year. has asked for small favors, copies of magazines i have and read, articles, etc. I have offered help and support tons of times without being asked. He has offered support in return, but not much more.

friend #3: a new friend. but so far, a good one.

so i mention to all three that i would like a letter of recommendation for something. Its not totally necessary, and i didn't ask any of them specifically, i just said that i'd like one. of course, there's no cost except postage, and the time is whatever they would have liked to spend on it.

friend #1: sent me a beautiful, well thought out letter. very personalized and clearly spent a lot of thought on it.

friend #2: nothing.

friend #3: emailed me a nice letter to send, and said they hoped it was enough but would gladly mail me one too.

I think I've discovered that friend #2 is a "fair weather friend" only. that sucks.

I have a few 'friends' like that.

In times of need I always tend to bend over backwards to help everyone, yet barely ever get the same token of appreciation.

you have me though.. would you like me to write a letter :evil:

hmmmm, the fact that all 3 friends are "HE" makes this thread worth of a sawastea appreciation award, and a Killah runer-up award for good measure too.

on the not so :rainbow: side of things, agreed with Raina, better to know in advance over a relatively small thing than when the help is REALLY required

thats how i am- i'd do anything for people i care about, but when it dawns on you that you wanted something small and one of the people you bend over backwards for just listened and then did nothing... its aggravating.

omg..friend 1 is SO my cousin. You know though sometimes "friends" like number 2 can surprise you and really come through in your time of need. But I do agree this kind of test of a person can say a lot.

Also, OMG this is a girlie thread! Who are you kidding with that "M"? ;)

dont sweat the small stuff, imo. your real friends are there for you when things get ugly - really ugly - and while letters and what not are nice, thoughtful things, theyre hardly a decent test of friendship (not that you should ever test friendship by choice, imo)

personally im really flaky with little stuff - birthdays? someone remind me. anniversaries? lol :lmao: helping you move house? 80% of the time. but when it comes to bigger things, ie 2am phone call to go to the bank and wire a grand to your mate who is stuck in another state, or drop everything and come and help (for free) on a construction site becasue youre about to lose the contract and are freaking out, or backing you up when there are 4 maori guys wanting to kick your face in - im there.

dont be so quick to label him a fair weather friend, imo :)

In 30 years of life I have been extremely lucky to have had 6 true friends. 4 I still talk to all the time, one sadly passed away (we remember) and one got married, so I chat with her less.

About a billion fair weather acquaintances, that's life. :)

sounds to me like you're judging/evaluating your friends. Maybe #2 has a reason for not doing what you asked. Also, be cautious who you call a friend. Most people befriend others for their own selfish reasons.

I know people who befriend a lot of people because they're afraid of being alone. Nothing wrong with it, but they befriend people to fill a need more than because they like the person. Not sayin that's you, but in my experience most people will befriend you for what you can do for them. But hey, I don't trust anybody so what do I know.

oh, i see what you mean. no- these are not friends out of convenience for me at all. the reason why i evaluated #2 is because i am realizing its ME who's the friend out of convenience and that might have to stop.

medium length friends have the least value. longest term ones will always perform best as there is a longer connection, and new fresh ones will often step up to the plate as the relationship is still being forged...

medium length ones are often complacent and this is often the time period where you "cut the fat" obviously...
